LAW ENFORCEMENT. Provides for the criminalistics laboratory operated by the sheriff
of Jefferson Parish. (8/1/12)
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 40:2266.3, relative to criminalistics laboratories operated by2
sheriffs; to exempt the criminalistics laboratory operated by the sheriff of Jefferson3
Parish from certain requirements; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 40:2266.3 is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows: 6
ยง2266.3. Criminalistics laboratories operated by sheriffs of Calcasieu, Jefferson,7
and St. Tammany parishes included herein8
The criminalistics laboratories presently operated by the sheriff of Calcasieu9
Parish for Vernon, Allen, Beauregard, Jefferson Davis, Cameron, and Calcasieu10
parishes, by the sheriff of Jefferson Parish, and by the sheriff of St. Tammany Parish11
are hereby authorized to operate within the terms and provisions of Chapter 13-B of12
this Title, as may be applicable, and to receive the benefits therein established, as13
fully as though said laboratories were in fact operated by legislatively created and14
authorized criminalistics laboratory commissions; however, except for the15
criminalistics laboratory operated by the sheriff of Jefferson Parish, said16
sheriff's laboratories shall be required to provide criminalistics laboratory services17 SB NO. 71

for such nearby surrounding parishes as may elect, upon the terms provided above,1
to participate in said laboratories, within limitations as are reasonably developed by2
legislatively created criminalistics laboratory commissions, until such time as said3
laboratories may become operated by legislatively created criminalistics laboratory4
commissions. The criminalistics laboratory operated by the sheriff of Calcasieu5
Parish shall be named and known as the Southwest Louisiana Criminalistics6
Laboratory.7

Present law provides relative to criminalistics laboratories operated by sheriffs of Calcasieu,
Jefferson , and St. Tammany parishes.  Present law further requires said sheriff's laboratories
to provide criminalistics laboratory services for nearby surrounding parishes.
Proposed law removes the requirement that the criminalistics laboratory operated by the
sheriff of Jefferson Parish provide criminalistics laboratory services for nearby surrounding
parishes.
Effective August 1, 2012.
