MOTOR VEHICLES. Provides that a person who successfully completes the Motorcycle,
Safety, Awareness, and Operator Training Program is not required to take a written
knowledge test to obtain an "M" endorsement on his driver's license. (8/1/12)
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 32:402.3(C) and 408(C)(1) relative, to motorcycle endorsements2
on drivers' licenses; to provide that persons meeting certain qualifications are not3
required to take a written knowledge test to obtain an "M" endorsement on a driver's4
license; and to provide for related matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1. R.S. 32:402.3(C) and 408(C)(1) are hereby amended and reenacted to read7
as follows:8
§402.3.  Motorcycle Safety, Awareness, and Operator Training Program; fund9

C. Participation in the program shall be voluntary for any person who meets11
the qualifications of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections to apply for a12
motorcycle operator's endorsement. Those persons who satisfactorily complete the13
program shall receive a motorcycle operator's endorsement without the necessity of14
taking a written knowledge test or an operator's skill test.15

C.(1) Motorcycles, motor driven cycles, and motorized bicycles shall not be2
given a separate class, as such, but their use shall be provided for by making an3
endorsement on one of the basic classes outlined in this Section. Such an4
endorsement shall be made only after the applicant has taken and successfully passed5
tests specifically designed for the operation of such vehicles. No written knowledge6
test or operator's skill test shall be required if an applicant has successfully7
completed the Motorcycle Safety, Awareness, and Operator Training Program8
provided in R.S. 17:282 32:402.3.9

Present law provides that a person who completes the Motorcycle Safety, Awareness, and
Operator Training Program is not required to take an operator's skill test but must complete
a written knowledge test to obtain an "M" endorsement on his driver's license.
Proposed law provides that a person who completes the Motorcycle Safety, Awareness, and
Operator Training Program is not required to take a written knowledge test to obtain an "M"
endorsement on his driver's license.
Effective August 1, 2012.
