SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 105
BY SENATOR CORTEZ 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Lafayette, Louisiana on being named The South's
Tastiest Town 2012 by Southern Living Magazine.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend the city of Lafayette, Louisiana on being honored as the winner of The South's2
Tastiest Town 2012 competition promoted by 	Southern Living Magazine.3
WHEREAS, in January 2012, the editors and culinary experts at 	Southern Living4
Magazine selected ten cities throughout the southern United States which were determined5
to have the best food offerings based on several criteria, which were food as a cultural6
identity, the growth of a cuisine culture within the community, diversity of food choices at7
a variety of price points, local and sustainable food practices, an abundance of noteworthy8
food events, and the emergence of avant garde chefs who push the boundaries of traditional9
fare; and10
WHEREAS, Southern Living Magazine senior editor, Paula Disbrowe, traveled to11
numerous cities, sampled dishes prepared by local tastemakers, chefs, and artisans, then12
selected the participants for competition; and 13
WHEREAS, the southern cities in competition for this recognition of tastiest town14
were Baltimore, Maryland; Birmingham, Alabama; Charleston, South Carolina;15
Charlottesville, Virginia; Decatur, Georgia; Houston, Texas; Lafayette, Louisiana;16
Louisville, Kentucky; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Raleigh, North Carolina; each city was17
heralded with a rich food culture and numerous regional delicacies; and18 SCR NO. 105

WHEREAS, Lafayette's nomination was due, in part, to the contributions of notable1
chefs and eateries, such as, Justin and Margaret Girouard, owners of "The French Press" for2
Sweet Baby Breesus sliders, Cajun Benedict, and Grits and Grillades; Lori Walls of3
"Johnson's Boucaniere" for country-style barbeque ribs with jambalaya; Donald Link and4
Stephen Stryjewski of "Couchon Lafayette" for duck confit with braised white beans,5
sausage, mizuna, and satsumas; as well as dishes prepared by Manny Augello of "Jolie's6
Louisiana Bistro", Mary Tutwiler and Nathan Stubbs of "The Saint Street Inn", and7
Collin Cormier of "Viva La Waffle", popular food truck; and8
WHEREAS, from a total of one-half million votes cast by the magazine's readers,9
Lafayette received nearly two hundred thousand votes, to defeat its closest competitor,10
Louisville, Kentucky, by thirty-five thousand votes, thereby earning the title of "The South's11
Tastiest Town 2012"; and12
WHEREAS, Lafayette lies at the center of Louisiana's Acadian culture and is highly13
representative of the state's unusual diversity of delicious cuisine available in every corner14
and in every kitchen across this great state.15
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby16
commend the city of Lafayette for the honor of being named The South's Tastiest Town17
2012 by the readers of Southern Living Magazine. 18
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express19
sincere appreciation to the chefs and eating establishments for their contributions of fine20
food and to citizens of Lafayette for continued support of unique culinary traditions.21
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to J. L.22
"Joey" Durel Jr., City-Parish President of Lafayette.23
