Highway 485 near St. Anne's Church as the Adai Indian Community in Natchitoches Parish and to erect appropriate signs to denote the area as the Adai Indian Community. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to designate the2 area along Louisiana Highway 485 approximately two miles north and one and one-3 half mile south of St. Anne's Church as the Adai Indian Community in Natchitoches4 Parish and to erect the appropriate signs to denote the area as the Adai Indian5 Community.6 WHEREAS, the Adai people have a long history that extends far beyond the earliest7 European settlers when the area around present-day Robeline, Louisiana, was recorded as8 the Adai Indian Nation, and the Presidio de Los Adais served as what was then the capitol9 of the Texas territory; and10 WHEREAS, the Adai Indian Nation and all of the tribal families eventually settled11 on a six-hundred acre land grant given by the United States in 1825 to their tribal leader,12 Chief Ca Ba Con Ma ("One Who Speaks"), also known as Manuel Flores; and13 WHEREAS, this land grant was within their original homeland and bordered Laguna14 de Los Adaes ("Lake of the Adais") so named by the Spaniards because the Adais had lived15 in the area from time immemorial, and where they currently reside today; and16 WHEREAS, the lake was later called the Old Spanish Lake by the European settlers17 and ultimately the Adai Community was later referred to as Spanish Lake Community; and18 SCR NO. 132 SLS 12RS-4496 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, after the Adai Indian people were recognized by the legislature as an1 Indian tribe in 1993 in Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 16, its members formally changed2 the name of the community to the Adai Indian Community; and3 WHEREAS, this designated land on each side of St. Anne Catholic Indian Mission4 Church, the third building rebuilt by the Adai Indian people as their community relocated5 through time, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 by the state of6 Louisiana and a bronze plaque commemorating its special place in history was erected by7 the Natchitoches Parish Tourist Commission; and8 WHEREAS, Louisiana Highway 485, St. Anne Indian Mission Church, and the Adai9 Indian Community have recently been included in the Historic District of the Cane River10 National Heritage Park.11 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby12 urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to designate the area13 approximately two miles north and one and one-half mile south of St. Anne Catholic Indian14 Mission Church along Louisiana Highway 485 as the Adai Indian Community.15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge16 and request the Department of Transportation and Development to erect the appropriate17 signs to denote the area as the Adai Indian Community.18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the19 secretary of the Department of Transportation and Development and to Chief Davis of the20 Adai Indian Community.21 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by McHenry Lee.
