half mile south of St. Anne's Church as the Adai Indian Community in Natchitoches
Parish and to erect the appropriate signs to denote the area as the Adai Indian
Community.
WHEREAS, the Adai people have a long history that extends far beyond the earliest
European settlers when the area around present-day Robeline, Louisiana, was recorded as
the Adai Indian Nation, and the Presidio de Los Adais served as what was then the capitol
of the Texas territory; and
WHEREAS, the Adai Indian Nation and all of the tribal families eventually settled
on a six-hundred acre land grant given by the United States in 1825 to their tribal leader,
Chief Ca Ba Con Ma ("One Who Speaks"), also known as Manuel Flores; and
WHEREAS, this land grant was within their original homeland and bordered Laguna
de Los Adaes ("Lake of the Adais") so named by the Spaniards because the Adais had lived
in the area from time immemorial, and where they currently reside today; and
WHEREAS, the lake was later called the Old Spanish Lake by the European settlers
and ultimately the Adai Community was later referred to as Spanish Lake Community; and
WHEREAS, after the Adai Indian people were recognized by the legislature as an
Indian tribe in 1993 in Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 16, its members formally changed
the name of the community to the Adai Indian Community; and
WHEREAS, this designated land on each side of St. Anne Catholic Indian Mission
Church, the third building rebuilt by the Adai Indian people as their community relocated
through time, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994 by the state of
Louisiana and a bronze plaque commemorating its special place in history was erected by
the Natchitoches Parish Tourist Commission; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana Highway 485, St. Anne Indian Mission Church, and the Adai
Indian Community have recently been included in the Historic District of the Cane River SCR NO. 132	ENROLLED
