SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 139

ADAMS, ARNOLD, BILLIOT, CONNICK, GIROD JACKSON AND
LEOPOLD 
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commend Stewart Young and Café Hope for cooking up great food and bright futures
with the "Seeds of Success Program" located at the historic Hope Haven campus in
Marrero.
WHEREAS, Café Hope is a program of the Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of New
Orleans that was started in 2010; and
WHEREAS, during the fourteen week program, the young adult participants are first
taught to believe in themselves, to develop an identity, and to trust again; and
WHEREAS, successful participants learn life skills necessary for self-sufficiency,
experience the feeling of accomplishment from hard work, are challenged by being held
accountable for their actions and punctual for their commitments, and learn to appreciate the
value of honest work; and
WHEREAS, Stewart Young grew up in Northern Ireland forty years ago and worked
with youth programs in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Edinburgh, Scotland, Natal, South Africa,
and South Central Los Angeles before coming to New Orleans on "an adventure" with his
wife, Robin; and
WHEREAS, Robin Young was able to entice her husband to the Crescent City all
because of its outstanding food, drink, music, and people; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Young saw there were not many social service programs catering
to older youth and because of his belief that "kids are kids", he matches each class of
students with a trained compassionate group of mentors; and 
WHEREAS, mentoring activities provide academic tutoring, college preparation
assistance, job skills building, and leadership development which can save our young
people's lives when so many youth are dying from violence each day; and  SCR NO. 139	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, more importantly Stewart Young's mentoring teaches the youthful
participants of the "Seeds of Success Program" that they are loved, respected, and truly cared
for each and every day.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend Stewart Young and Café Hope for cooking up great food and bright futures with
the "Seeds of Success Program" located at the historic Hope Haven campus in Marrero.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
Stewart Young and Café Hope.
