Expresses heartfelt condolences for the death of Eugene "Doc" Harvey, longtime Grambling State University athletic trainer. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Eugene2 "Doc" Harvey, longtime Grambling State University athletic trainer.3 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret that the Legislature of Louisiana has learned of the4 death of Eugene "Doc" Harvey, on May 22, 2012; and 5 WHEREAS, Eugene Isaac Harvey was the fifth child born to George and Blanch6 Harvey, in Berwick, Louisiana and was educated in the public school system of St. Mary7 Parish, after which he entered the United States Navy and served during World War II; and8 WHEREAS, upon completion of his military service, he entered Xavier University9 and later the University of Indiana where he also began as an athletic trainer; and10 WHEREAS, after receiving his B.S. degree, he stayed on to complete his Masters11 and earned a physical therapy certificate at the American Institute of Science in Indianapolis,12 Indiana; and13 WHEREAS, after college, his first job was as a trainer for the Brooklyn Dodgers and14 later the Los Angeles Dodgers and, in the 1950s, he worked with Hall of Famers Jackie15 Robinson and Duke Snider and with Roy Campanella; and16 WHEREAS, after his tenure with the Dodgers, Doc Harvey joined the Grambling17 State University Athletic Department where he served as the Athletic Trainer for men's and18 SCR NO. 144 SLS 12RS-5321 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 women's teams for a period in excess of fifty years; and although he retired from the1 Grambling athletic department in 1998, he still served as not only a volunteer, but a mentor2 to the training staff of the GSU athletic department; and3 WHEREAS, in 1980, he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame; six years later4 he was honored by the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame; in the summer5 of 2011 he was inducted in the GSU Legends Hall of Fame; and he is currently listed as a6 candidate in the field of Sports Medicine for the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; and7 WHEREAS, he was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-one years, Eva Mae Davis8 Harvey; one brother, George Harvey; and three sisters, Margaret Phillips, Beatrice Dumas,9 and Annie Belle Turner; and10 WHEREAS, Doc Harvey leaves to mourn his passing two daughters, Carla H. Moore11 and Cynthia H. Douglas (Ernest); one grand-daughter, Morgan Elizabeth Douglas; and one12 step grand-daughter, MiaChante' Douglas; several nieces, nephews, cousins, a countless13 number of Grambling athletes, and a myriad of friends.14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby15 express sincere condolences to the family of Eugene "Doc" Harvey, longtime Grambling16 State University athletic trainer, on the occasion of his death, does hereby recognize and17 record for posterity his outstanding accomplishments and singular contributions, and does18 hereby extend true appreciation for his enduring legacy that will forever be a source of pride19 and honor for his family, friends, colleagues, community, university, and state.20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Carla21 H.
