SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 124
BY SENATOR WALSWORTH 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Dr. Gary Stringer upon his retirement from the
University of Louisiana at Monroe.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Dr. Gary Stringer on his retirement as head of the University of Louisiana at2
Monroe Atmospheric Science, Earth Science and Physics Department after a lengthy3
and highly successful career in geology.4
WHEREAS, Dr. Stringer is a distinguished educator and a renowned researcher,5
working in the petroleum industry both as an employee and as a consultant as well as an6
educator at the high school and university level; and7
WHEREAS, Dr. Stringer has collaborated with international scientists and8
paleontologists in England, Belgium, Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy,9
the West Indies and Russia on the study of fossil fishes; and10
WHEREAS, in addition to publishing over sixty articles, chapters in books, and11
creation of major presentations around the scientific world, Dr. Stringer has succeeded in12
obtaining more than two million dollars in grant funding from numerous funding agencies13
for the study of earth science curriculum, experiments, hands on classroom activities and14
field trips; and15
WHEREAS, Dr. Stringer has been very active in both professional and community16
service, serving as a member of more than twenty professional societies, including the17
Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, the Scientific Research Society, the Geological Society18 SR NO. 124

of America, and the Paleontological Research Institution; and1
WHEREAS, Dr. Gary Stringer has made major presentations at numerous2
conferences and conventions of the world's scientific leaders at the international, national,3
regional and state levels; and4
WHEREAS, Dr. Stringer has received many high professional honors for his work,5
including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching from6
the National Science Foundation; and7
WHEREAS, Dr. Stringer is the holder of the Mayme and Tom Scott Professorship8
in Teaching Excellence, an endowment established to encourage and reward excellence in9
teaching, learning and research at ULM; and10
WHEREAS, Dr. Stringer has taught geology and science education at the University11
of Louisiana at Monroe for more than twenty years, taking the institution to new standards12
of excellence in scientific research and bringing it acclaim from scientists from around the13
world.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana15
does hereby extend its highest commendations and congratulations to Dr. Gary Stringer for16
his extraordinary leadership in the field of geology, his major contributions to education in17
Louisiana, and for his great vision and untiring work on behalf of the University of18
Louisiana at Monroe.19
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Dr.20
Gary Stringer and the ULM Geology Department.21
