SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 141
BY SENATOR JOHN SMITH 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Angela Ortiz for signing a letter of intent to play
basketball for Louisiana College.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Angela Ortiz, a student at Anacoco High School in Vernon Parish, upon the2
occasion of her signing a national letter of intent committing her to play basketball3
at Louisiana College, beginning in the fall.4
WHEREAS, despite having her senior year of basketball cut short by surgery to5
repair the anterior cruciate ligament and the meniscus in her right knee, Angela will be6
playing basketball next year not far from home; and7
WHEREAS, since the injury to her knee and the repair surgery on March 2, 2012,8
Angela has been running and working hard to return to playing shape for another season of9
basketball, this time at the college level; and10
WHEREAS, Angela's injury sidelined her for the last seven games of the 201211
season, all wins until a heart-breaking loss to eventual state champion, Fairview, in the semi-12
finals of the state tournament; and13
WHEREAS, despite her disappointment in not being able to play down the stretch,14
Angela was always on the bench, cheering her teammates on; and15
WHEREAS, according to her father, Ray Ortiz, Angela has a strong head and has16
been a very determined young woman and "she has a great work ethic and we are very17
confident that she will continue working hard"; and18 SR NO. 141

WHEREAS, Angela will have the chance to fulfill her dream of playing basketball1
at the college level; and2
WHEREAS, Angela is a two-time All-Vernon and All-District performer in3
basketball; she also is the proud holder of a 3.67 grade point average and will receive an4
academic scholarship to Louisiana College, a National Collegiate Athletic Association5
(NCAA) Division 3 institution in Pineville, Louisiana; and6
WHEREAS, despite suffering a season-ending injury late in the season, Angela was7
an honorable mention all-state selection, averaged thirteen points, seven rebounds, and five8
steals per game, and led the District 5-B Lady Indians to an undefeated season in league9
play; and10
WHEREAS, Angela states that she has learned from Coach Michele Goins to be a11
leader on and off the court, and she intends to take the skills and knowledge that she has12
learned at Anacoco High School to Louisiana College, seeking further success both in13
basketball and in her college studies.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana15
does hereby commend Angela Ortiz upon the occasion of her signing a national letter of16
intent committing her to play basketball at Louisiana College in the fall.17
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to18
Angela Ortiz.19
