SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 168

COMMENDATIONS. Commends and congratulates the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium
at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum in Baton Rouge on hosting the 2012 International
Planetarium Society Conference and welcomes delegates to the conference.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend and congratulate the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium at the Louisiana Art &2
Science Museum in Baton Rouge on hosting the 2012 International Planetarium3
Society Conference and to welcome delegates to the conference to Louisiana and4
Baton Rouge.5
WHEREAS, the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium at the Louisiana Art & Science6
Museum (LASM) is hosting the International Planetarium Society Conference during July7
22-26, 2012; and 8
WHEREAS, the conference, which is held biennially, will bring scientists, educators,9
and vendors from all over the world to Louisiana and Baton Rouge; and10
WHEREAS, the conference venues will include the Pennington Planetarium, LASM,11
the Old State Capitol, Shaw Center for the Arts, The Manship Theater, the River Center12
Conference Center and Hilton - Indigo - Belle hotels and will feature prestigious keynote13
speakers from Switzerland, Chicago, and Berleley; and14
WHEREAS, the International Planetarium Society, founded in 1970, the largest15
planetarium society in the world, is an association of planetarium professionals throughout16
the world; and17
WHEREAS, members of the society represent schools, colleges, universities,18 SR NO. 168

museums and public facilities of all sizes, including small portable planetariums; and1
WHEREAS, host sites for prior conferences include Melbourne, Australia; Osaka,2
Japan; Chicago; London, England; Borlänge, Sweden; Washington, D.C.; Valencia, Spain;3
and Alexandria, Egypt and the 2014 conference will be held in Beijing, China; and4
WHEREAS, through the efforts of Planetarium Director and International5
Planetarium Society Past President Jon Elvert, who traveled to Toulouse, France to attend6
the council meeting of the International Planetarium Society and to present the bid invitation7
which included a detailed presentation that was assembled with the assistance of the Baton8
Rouge Area and Convention Visitors Bureau, the LASM and the Irene W. Pennington9
Planetarium was selected as the host site for the 2012 Conference over the Morrison10
Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and the Astronef11
Planetarium in Saint-Etienne, France; and12
WHEREAS, there will be over five hundred delegates from some forty countries,13
including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Finland, Ghana, Japan, Mexico,14
Portugal, South Korea, and Syria, attending the conference, perhaps the largest such15
conference ever.16
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana17
does hereby commend and congratulate the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium at the18
Louisiana Art & Science Museum in Baton Rouge on hosting the 2012 International19
Planetarium Society Conference.20
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the delegates to the 2012 International21
Planetarium Society Conference are hereby welcomed to Louisiana and Baton Rouge and22
best wishes are hereby extended for a successful conference.23
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Jon24
