SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 41
BY SENATOR BROOME 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Dr. Velma Hunter Jackson, DDS, for her many
contributions to the greater Baton Rouge area.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Dr. Velma Hunter Jackson, DDS, for her many contributions made to the2
greater Baton Rouge area.3
WHEREAS, Dr. Velma Hunter Jackson has served in several professional positions4
including director of the dental clinic with Health Power Associates, Inc. from 1972 to 1973;5
and6
WHEREAS, she provided an active role in public health activities, including dental7
health education and care for patients in under-served communities in New Orleans; and8
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson served as director of community relations with the9
University of Detroit Dental Center from 1973 to 1974; and10
WHEREAS, she advised junior and senior dental students on opportunities to pursue11
community-based programs, and was instrumental in the planning and organizing of the12
Satellite Dental Clinic Program to prepare senior dental students for work as private13
practitioners; and14
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson was the clinical instructor for Wayne State County15
Community College in Detroit, Michigan, from 1974 to 1976; and16
WHEREAS, she provided specialized training for dental assistants and hygienists to17
prepare them for expanded duties in an office setting through clinical and theoretical18 SR NO. 41

learning experiences in the areas of dental anatomy, oral pathology, operative dentistry and1
dental materials; and2
WHEREAS, from 1977 to 1979, she initiated detailed implementation of technical,3
preventative and evaluator aspects of public health dentistry while at the Franklin Child4
Health Center in Detroit, Michigan; and5
WHEREAS, from 1977 to 1978, as director of dental services, she provided6
supervisory and administrative oversight of the DMIC-PRESCAD services for the Wayne7
County Community Civil Service Commission in Detroit, Michigan; and8
WHEREAS, since 1979, Dr. Jackson has a private practice, Renaissance Smiles, in9
Baton Rouge, Louisiana, providing extensive family practice dentistry to a patient volume10
that exceeds twenty thousand; and11
WHEREAS, Renaissance Smiles focuses on cosmetic dentistry and Smile Design and12
provides services for a diverse population of children and adults; and13
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson received her bachelor of science in Biology in 1968 from14
Fisk University, and her doctorate of dental surgery in 1972, from Meharry Medical College15
in Nashville, Tennessee; and16
WHEREAS, she belongs to numerous professional dental societies and organizations17
including the American Dental Association, the National Dental Association, and the18
Louisiana Dental Association; and19
WHEREAS, Dr. Jackson has received numerous honors and awards including the20
American Academy of Oral Pathology Award, the Oral Surgery Department Award, the21
Martin Luther King Fellowship Award, and was a 1984 nominee for the YMCA Woman of22
the Year; and23
WHEREAS, she has served on numerous social, civic and religious affiliations24
including the Audobon Girl Scouts Council board of directors, the Playmakers of Baton25
Rouge Board of Directors, founder and executive director of A Place of Refuge, and past26
president of Jack & Jill of America; and27
WHEREAS, on May 5, 2012, Dr. Jackson will be honored by the Greater Baton28
Rouge Chapter of the MeHarry National Alumni Association for the contributions she has29
made and continues to make to the citizens of the Greater Baton Rouge area.30 SR NO. 41

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana1
does hereby congratulate and extend sincere appreciation to Dr. Velma Hunter Jackson,2
DDS, for her many contributions to the greater Baton Rouge area and all the lives she has3
touched, taught, and healed in the state.4
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Dr.5
Velma Hunter Jackson, DDS.6
