Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2012 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 42 BY SENATOR NEVERS A RESOLUTION To commend and congratulate Lou Major Sr. of Bogalusa, Louisiana, upon induction into the LSU Manship School Hall of Fame at the 38 th Annual Hall of Fame Gala on Thursday evening, April 19 th , 2012. WHEREAS, in 1951, Lou Major graduated from the LSU School of Journalism, now the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication, where he served as president of the journalism fraternity Pi Alpha Mu in his senior year; and WHEREAS, on July 6, 1951, Bogalusa publisher Halford R. Houser wrote "Mr. Major" a letter offering him a starting salary of $45 a week, and declaring that: "If you show the stuff that I believe is in you, you won't stay long"; and WHEREAS, Lou Major and his wife Peggy moved to Bogalusa to start his first job as a "cub reporter" with The Daily News on July 20, 1951; and WHEREAS, Lou Major worked his way from Reporter to Sports Editor, News Editor, Managing Editor, and General Manager, and in 1963, to Publisher of The Daily News, a position in which he served through 1997; and WHEREAS, Lou Major went on to become president and CEO of Wick Communications, where, under his leadership, the company grew to include 30 community newspapers and specialty publications in 10 states; and WHEREAS, in 2001, Lou Major retired after 50 years of "active duty" with Wick Communications, and was named to the company's board of directors; and WHEREAS, Lou Major is now in his 62 nd year of a newspaper career with The Daily News in Bogalusa, thereby demonstrating that he indeed did have in him "the stuff" of great journalism his publisher had recognized all those years ago. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Lou Major Sr. upon his induction into the LSU Manship School Hall of Fame at the 38 th Annual Hall of Fame Gala on April 19 th , 2012.
