Recognizes Thursday, April 19, 2012, as the twenty-eight annual "Red and White Day" at the Louisiana Legislature. A RESOLUTION1 To recognize Thursday, April 19, 2012, as the twenty-eighth annual "Red and White Day"2 at the Louisiana Senate.3 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated,4 for its outstanding achievements and generous community service and to recognize5 Thursday, April 19, 2012, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority "Red and White Day" at the6 Louisiana Senate; and7 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by8 twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University who were eager to use their collective9 strength to promote academic excellence, to provide scholarships and support to those in10 need, to educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy,11 and to highlight issues and find solutions to problems in their communities; and12 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 and is a private,13 nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs14 in local communities and throughout the world; and15 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a sisterhood of more than two hundred16 thousand predominantly black, college-educated women, and the sorority has more than nine17 hundred chapters located in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands,18 SR NO. 45 SLS 12RS-1901 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and1 WHEREAS, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority represent a unique segment of2 the nation's demographic profile; and3 WHEREAS, the major programs of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are based on the4 organization's Five Point Programmatic Thrust, which focuses on economic development,5 educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental6 health, and political awareness and involvement; and7 WHEREAS, the organizational structure and governance of Delta Sigma Theta8 Sorority is invested in the Grand Chapter, which meets at a national convention biennially,9 and regional conferences are held in the seven geographic regions of the organization during10 non-convention years; and11 WHEREAS, the success of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's public service programs has12 depended upon the commendation for their commitment to community service and academic13 achievement as well as their quest for excellence in all endeavors in their lives.14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana15 does hereby recognize Thursday, April 19, 2012, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority16 Incorporated's "Red and White Day" at the Louisiana Senate, does hereby commend the17 women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their exceptional achievements and18 manifold contributions, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation to the organization19 and its members for the tremendous honor and pride that they bring to their local20 communities, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America.21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the22 president of the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to the23 regional director for the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.24 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by James Benton.
