SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 63

SENATE. Recognizes Thursday, April 19, 2012, as Southern University Day at the
Louisiana State Capitol.
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize Thursday, April 19, 2012, as Southern University Day at the Louisiana State2
Capitol.3
WHEREAS, Southern University is celebrating its one hundred thirty-second year4
of excellence in higher education; and 5
WHEREAS, in 1880, the university began in New Orleans with twelve students, five6
faculty members, and a ten thousand dollar budget, and the university was relocated to Baton7
Rouge in 1914; and 8
WHEREAS, the Southern University System has risen to become one of the9
country's premier historically black institutions, offering numerous degree programs ranging10
from certificates to doctorates; and11
WHEREAS, the Southern University System has a statewide presence with campuses12
in Baton Rouge, consisting of the main campus, the Law Center, and the Agricultural13
Research and Extension Center; New Orleans; and Shreveport; and 14
WHEREAS, the Southern University System holds the distinction of being the15
nation's only historically black 1890 land grant university system; and 16
WHEREAS, the system boasts more than one hundred thousand graduates, and17
Southern's alumni have gone on to make significant contributions to their chosen professions18 SR NO. 63

throughout the state, nation, and world; and 1
WHEREAS, Southern University merits a special measure of recognition upon the2
celebration of its exemplary education tradition that now spans one hundred thirty-two years.3
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana4
does hereby recognize Thursday, April 19, 2012, as Southern University Day at the5
Louisiana State Capitol, does hereby recognize and record for posterity the pride and honor6
that Southern University brings to the state of Louisiana, does hereby express sincere7
appreciation for its singular legacy of excellence, and does hereby extend to the entire8
Southern family best wishes upon this memorable day.9
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the10
president of the Southern University System. 11
