SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 63

A RESOLUTION
To recognize Thursday, April 19, 2012, as Southern University Day at the Louisiana State
Capitol.
WHEREAS, Southern University is celebrating its one hundred thirty-second year
of excellence in higher education; and
WHEREAS, in 1880, the university began in New Orleans with twelve students, five
faculty members, and a ten thousand dollar budget, and the university was relocated to Baton
Rouge in 1914; and
WHEREAS, the Southern University System has risen to become one of the
country's premier historically black institutions, offering numerous degree programs ranging
from certificates to doctorates; and
WHEREAS, the Southern University System has a statewide presence with campuses
in Baton Rouge, consisting of the main campus, the Law Center, and the Agricultural
Research and Extension Center; New Orleans; and Shreveport; and
WHEREAS, the Southern University System holds the distinction of being the
nation's only historically black 1890 land grant university system; and
WHEREAS, the system boasts more than one hundred thousand graduates, and
Southern's alumni have gone on to make significant contributions to their chosen professions
throughout the state, nation, and world; and
WHEREAS, Southern University merits a special measure of recognition upon the
celebration of its exemplary education tradition that now spans one hundred thirty-two years.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby recognize Thursday, April 19, 2012, as Southern University Day at the
Louisiana State Capitol, does hereby recognize and record for posterity the pride and honor SR NO. 63 ENROLLED

that Southern University brings to the state of Louisiana, does hereby express sincere
appreciation for its singular legacy of excellence, and does hereby extend to the entire
Southern family best wishes upon this memorable day.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
president of the Southern University System.
