SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 87
BY SENATOR PETERSON 
COMMENDATIONS.  Recognizes Tulane University for its work in the areas of
bioenvironmental, cancer and women's issues research and to Louisiana as a whole.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Tulane University for the work and research it does in critical areas such as2
bioenvironmental, cancer and research involving women's issues, and for its3
contributions to the state of Louisiana.4
WHEREAS, Tulane University was founded in 1834 and is one of the most highly5
regarded and selective independent research universities in the United States. The6
undergraduate experience is marked by close student-faculty interaction, a variety of campus7
programs, and a diverse student body representing all fifty states and more than forty8
different countries; and9
WHEREAS, Tulane is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern10
Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, masters, doctorate,11
and professional degrees; and12
WHEREAS, Tulane is the largest employer in New Orleans, having four thousand13
four hundred employees; and14
WHEREAS, as a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities,15
Tulane takes pride in being a part of a select group of universities with pre-eminent16
programs of graduate and professional education and scholarly research; and17
WHEREAS, Tulane's schools and colleges offer undergraduate, graduate and18 SR NO. 87

professional degrees in the liberal arts, science and engineering, architecture, business, law,1
social work, medicine and public health and tropical medicine; and2
WHEREAS, research in many disciplines has flourished at Tulane through the3
establishment of centers such as the Newcomb College Institute, the Roger Thayer Stone4
Center for Latin American Studies, the Middle American Research Institute, the5
Tulane/Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research, the Murphy Institute, the Tulane6
Cancer Center, the Tulane Center for Gene Therapy, the Newcomb College Center for7
Research on Women, and the Tulane Xavier National Center of Excellence in Women's8
Health; and9
WHEREAS, the Center for Bioenvironmental Research (CBR) promotes the use of10
science in the formulation of public policy and offers expert communication about11
environmental health risks and their management. To achieve these goals, the CBR is12
establishing an active partnership with business, government, and interested members of the13
public in order to make the CBR's research responsive to the needs of the entire community.14
The CBR is particularly concerned with resolving environmental issues facing Louisiana and15
the Gulf South region; and16
WHEREAS, the Tulane Xavier National Center of Excellence in Women's Health17
(TUXCOE) is one of eighteen designated Centers of Excellence in Women's Health in the18
United States. TUXCOE is a collaborative effort between Tulane University Health Sciences19
Center, Tulane University Hospital and Clinic, Xavier University and local partners. The20
mission of TUXCOE is to increase awareness of women's health, make health services work21
better for women, expand the knowledge base in women's health issues and increase22
women's involvement in their health and health care; and23
WHEREAS, Tulane is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of24
Teaching as a university with very high research activity; and25
WHEREAS, Tulane strives to connect its values and mission to the needs of the city26
of New Orleans, the state, and the nation. Community involvement is now more important27
than ever as the university participates in the rebirth of New Orleans. Faculty and staff lend28
their expertise to rebuilding efforts and students gain real-world experience while putting29
their skills to use in the community.30 SR NO. 87

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana1
does hereby commend Tulane University for the work it does in many areas, including2
bioenvironmental, cancer and research involving women's issues, and for its contributions3
to Louisiana.4
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to5
Tulane University.6
