Commends Loyola University in New Orleans for the contribution that it makes each day to the state of Louisiana by preparing young professionals to compete in the legal, academic and business environments. A RESOLUTION1 To commend Loyola University, New Orleans for the contribution that it makes each day2 to the state of Louisiana by preparing young professionals to strongly compete in the3 legal, academic and business environments.4 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Loyola University, New Orleans for the5 contribution that it makes each day to the state of Louisiana by preparing young6 professionals to strongly compete in the legal, academic and business environments; and7 WHEREAS, Loyola University, New Orleans is a private, co-educational and Jesuit8 University located in New Orleans, Louisiana; and 9 WHEREAS, originally established as Loyola College in 1904, the institution was10 chartered as a university in 1912; and 11 WHEREAS, it bears the name of the Jesuit patron, Saint Ignatius of Loyola; and 12 WHEREAS, Loyola is one of twenty-eight member institutions that make up the13 Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and, with its current enrollment of14 approximately 5000 students, is among the larger Jesuit universities in the Southern United15 States; and16 WHEREAS, Loyola University, New Orleans is ranked fifth best institution among17 Southern regional universities offering masters and undergraduate degrees in the 2008 issue18 SR NO. 89 SLS 12RS-3377 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 of the annual America's Best Colleges issue and guidebook published by U.S. News &1 World Report; and2 WHEREAS, the Princeton Review also features Loyola, New Orleans in the most3 recent editions of its annual book, The Best 371 Colleges; in the past, the school has been4 called Loyola of the South, Loyola New Orleans, Loyola University, New Orleans, and5 Loyola University of New Orleans but whichever name is used to identify the University,6 it is clear that when Loyola is spoken of, there is a reference to greatness; and7 WHEREAS, Loyola University, New Orleans, a Jesuit and Catholic institution of8 higher education, welcomes students of diverse backgrounds and prepares them to lead9 meaningful lives with and for others, to pursue truth, wisdom, and virtue, and to work for10 a more just world; and 11 WHEREAS, inspired by Ignatius of Loyola's vision of finding God in all things, the12 university is grounded in the liberal arts and sciences, while also offering opportunities for13 professional studies in undergraduate and selected graduate programs; and 14 WHEREAS, through teaching, research, creative activities, and service, the faculty,15 in cooperation with the staff, strives to educate the whole student and to benefit the larger16 community; and17 WHEREAS, Loyola University has been ranked for the last twenty-one years among18 the top ten Southern regional schools by U.S. News & World Report, ranked eighth Best19 Regional University in the South in the 2012 edition of America's Best Colleges by U.S.20 News & World Report, ranked fifth in the U.S. News & World Report's Great Schools, Great21 Prices category and listed as an A+ School for B Students by U.S. News & World Report22 which ranked Loyola's service learning programs among the top twenty-nine in the nation23 in 2010; and24 WHEREAS, Loyola University, New Orleans, merits a heartfelt measure of25 commendation for the pride and honor it brings to the city of New Orleans and to the state26 of Louisiana.27 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana28 does hereby commend Loyola University, New Orleans for the contribution that it makes29 each day to the state of Louisiana by preparing young professionals to strongly compete in30 SR NO. 89 SLS 12RS-3377 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 3 the legal, academic and business environments.1 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the2 chancellor of Loyola University, New Orleans.3 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by James Benton.
