SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 89

A RESOLUTION
To commend Loyola University, New Orleans for the contribution that it makes each day
to the state of Louisiana by preparing young professionals to strongly compete in the
legal, academic and business environments.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Loyola University, New Orleans for the
contribution that it makes each day to the state of Louisiana by preparing young
professionals to strongly compete in the legal, academic and business environments; and
WHEREAS, Loyola University, New Orleans is a private, co-educational and Jesuit
University located in New Orleans, Louisiana; and 
WHEREAS, originally established as Loyola College in 1904, the institution was
chartered as a university in 1912; and 
WHEREAS, it bears the name of the Jesuit patron, Saint Ignatius of Loyola; and 
WHEREAS, Loyola is one of twenty-eight member institutions that make up the
Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and, with its current enrollment of
approximately 5000 students, is among the larger Jesuit universities in the Southern United
States; and
WHEREAS, Loyola University, New Orleans is ranked fifth best institution among
Southern regional universities offering masters and undergraduate degrees in the 2008 issue
of the annual America's Best Colleges issue and guidebook published by U.S. News &
World Report; and
WHEREAS, the Princeton Review also features Loyola, New Orleans in the most
recent editions of its annual book, The Best 371 Colleges; in the past, the school has been
called Loyola of the South, Loyola New Orleans, Loyola University, New Orleans, and
Loyola University of New Orleans but whichever name is used to identify the University,
it is clear that when Loyola is spoken of, there is a reference to greatness; and SR NO. 89	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, Loyola University, New Orleans, a Jesuit and Catholic institution of
higher education, welcomes students of diverse backgrounds and prepares them to lead
meaningful lives with and for others, to pursue truth, wisdom, and virtue, and to work for
a more just world; and 
WHEREAS, inspired by Ignatius of Loyola's vision of finding God in all things, the
university is grounded in the liberal arts and sciences, while also offering opportunities for
professional studies in undergraduate and selected graduate programs; and 
WHEREAS, through teaching, research, creative activities, and service, the faculty,
in cooperation with the staff, strives to educate the whole student and to benefit the larger
community; and
WHEREAS, Loyola University has been ranked for the last twenty-one years among
the top ten Southern regional schools by U.S. News & World Report, ranked eighth Best
Regional University in the South in the 2012 edition of America's Best Colleges by U.S.
News & World Report, ranked fifth in the U.S. News & World Report's Great Schools, Great
Prices category and listed as an A+ School for B Students by U.S. News & World Report
which ranked Loyola's service learning programs among the top twenty-nine in the nation
in 2010; and
WHEREAS, Loyola University, New Orleans, merits a heartfelt measure of
commendation for the pride and honor it brings to the city of New Orleans and to the state
of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend Loyola University, New Orleans for the contribution that it makes
each day to the state of Louisiana by preparing young professionals to strongly compete in
the legal, academic and business environments.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
chancellor of Loyola University, New Orleans.
