HOSPITALS: Provides for the definition of a rural hospital for purposes of the Rural
Hospital Preservation Act
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 40:1300.143(7)(a)(xiv), relative to the Rural Hospital Preservation Act; to2
provide for the definition of certain rural hospitals; and to provide for related3
matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 40:1300.143(7)(a)(xiv) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 6

As used in this Part:8

(7)(a) "Rural hospital" means a hospital licensed by the department which10
meets one of the following criteria:11

(xiv) Has no more than sixty hospital beds as of August 1, 2013; and13
(aa) Is located, as measured by the 2010 census, in a municipality with a14
population of less than thirteen thousand three hundred.15
(bb) Is located, as measured by the 2010 census, in a parish with a16
population of less than sixty-two thousand.17

Abstract: Establishes the criteria for a hospital located in a municipality with a population
of less than 13,300, in a parish of less than 62,000, and with no more than 60 hospital beds
to be designated as a "rural hospital".
Proposed law provides that a hospital located in a municipality with a population of less than
13,300, in a parish of less than 62,000, and with no more than 60 hospital beds as of August
1, 2013, is designated as a "rural hospital".
