Schroder (HB 6) Act No. 400
Existing law provides for the crime of carrying a firearm or dangerous weapon by a student
or nonstudent on school property, at school-sponsored functions, or in a firearm-free zone.
Prior law provided that the existing law crime shall not apply to the carrying of a firearm or
dangerous weapon by a federal, state, or local law enforcement officer in the performance
of his official duties.
New law changes prior law to provide that the crime shall not apply to a federal law
enforcement officer or a La. commissioned state or local POST Certified law enforcement
officer who is authorized to carry a firearm, and removes the qualification that the law
enforcement officer be in the performance of his official duties for the exception to apply.
Effective August 1, 2013.
