PHARMACISTS:  Provides relative to pharmacy-generated drugs
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 37:1224(A) and to enact R.S. 37:1164(57), relative to pharmacy-2
generated drugs; to define pharmacy-generated drug; to provide for the compounding3
and filling of prescriptions; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 37:1224(A) is hereby amended and reenacted and R.S. 37:1164(57)6
is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7
§1164.  Definitions8
As used in this Chapter, the following terms have the meaning ascribed to9
them by this Section:10

(57) "Pharmacy-generated drug" means a drug made by a pharmacy.12

§1224.  Compounding and filling of prescriptions; absence of pharmacist14
A. In each pharmacy there shall be a pharmacist on duty at all times.  The15
filling, compounding, and dispensing of prescriptions, and the making of16
pharmacy-generated drugs, shall be accomplished in compliance with standards17
established by the board by rule. The performance of these activities shall be limited18
to pharmacists and pharmacy interns, and pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy19
technician candidates acting under the supervision of a pharmacist.20

Abstract: Defines pharmacy-generated drug; requires a person filling, compounding, and
dispensing prescriptions or making pharmacy-generated drugs to be a pharmacist or
pharmacy intern, pharmacy technician, or pharmacy technician candidate acting
under the supervision of a pharmacist. 
Proposed law defines "pharmacy-generated drug" as a drug made by a pharmacy.
Present law requires a pharmacist to be on duty in each pharmacy at all times.
Proposed law retains present law.
Present law requires the filling, compounding, and dispensing of prescriptions to be limited
to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians acting under the supervision of a pharmacist.
Proposed law requires the filling, compounding, and dispensing of prescriptions, and the
making of pharmacy-generated drugs, to be accomplished in compliance with standards
established by the La. Board of Pharmacy by administrative rule.  	Proposed law further
requires the performance of these activities to be limited to pharmacists and pharmacy
interns, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy technician candidates acting under the
supervision of a pharmacist.
