COURTS/CITY:  Increases the jurisdictional amount in dispute in the City Court of
Shreveport
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact Code of Civil Procedure Article 4843(E) and (H), relative to the2
jurisdictional amount in dispute for city courts; to increase the jurisdictional amount3
in dispute for the City Court of Shreveport; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. Code of Civil Procedure Article 4843(E) and (H) are hereby amended and6
reenacted to read as follows: 7
Art. 4843. City court jurisdiction; amount in dispute; injunctive actions by state or8
political subdivision9

E. In the City Court of Bogalusa, the City Court of Bunkie, the City Court11
of Eunice, the City Court of Lake Charles, the City Court of Marksville, the City12
Court of Natchitoches, a city court in New Orleans, the City Court of Opelousas, the13
City Court of Plaquemine, the City Court of Port Allen, the City Court of Shreveport,14
the City Court of Sulphur, and the City Court of Winnsboro, the civil jurisdiction is15
concurrent with the district court in cases where the amount in dispute, or the value16
of the property involved, does not exceed twenty-five thousand dollars.17

jurisdiction is concurrent with the district court in cases where the amount in dispute,1
or the value of the property involved, does not exceed the amount provided in Article2
1732(1) for purposes of demanding a jury trial.3

Abstract: Increases the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute for the City Court of
Shreveport from $25,000 to an amount that does not exceed the amount for purposes
of demanding a jury trial.
Present law provides that in the City Court of Shreveport, the civil jurisdiction is concurrent
with the district court in cases where the amount in dispute, or the value of the property
involved, does not exceed $25,000.
Present law also provides that in the City Court of Alexandria, the City Court of Pineville,
the City Court of Slidell, and the City Court of Ruston, the civil jurisdiction is concurrent
with the district court in cases where the amount in dispute, or the value of the property
involved, does not exceed the amount triggering the right to demand a jury trial.
Proposed law increases the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute in the City Court of
Shreveport from $25,000 to an amount that does not trigger the right to demand a jury trial
(a cause of action exceeding $50,000 exclusive of interest and costs).
