Patrick Williams	HB No. 9
Abstract: Increases the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute for the City Court of Shreveport
from $25,000 to an amount that does not exceed the amount for purposes of demanding a
jury trial.
Present law provides that in the City Court of Shreveport, the civil jurisdiction is concurrent with
the district court in cases where the amount in dispute, or the value of the property involved, does
not exceed $25,000.
Present law also provides that in the City Court of Alexandria, the City Court of Pineville, the
City Court of Slidell, and the City Court of Ruston, the civil jurisdiction is concurrent with the
district court in cases where the amount in dispute, or the value of the property involved, does not
exceed the amount triggering the right to demand a jury trial.
Proposed law increases the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute in the City Court of Shreveport
from $25,000 to an amount that does not trigger the right to demand a jury trial (a cause of action
exceeding $50,000 exclusive of interest and costs).
