Abstract: Repeals provisions relative to the Garyville Timbermill Museum.
Present law provides for the establishment of the Garyville Timbermill Museum as a facility in
the parish of St. John the Baptist.  Further provides that the museum shall be a historical,
cultural, scientific, and technological educational institution whose primary purpose shall be to
research, collect, preserve, and present, as an educational resource, documents, artifacts, objects
of art, and the like that reflect the social, cultural, and economic history of the timber industry in
La. and the St. John the Baptist Parish area in particular.
Present law provides for the creation of the governing board of the museum.  The board shall be
comprised of nine members who have a knowledge of and interest in timber and timber
production.  Members of the board shall serve without compensation.  Further provides that the
domicile of the board shall be in the parish of St. John the Baptist.
Present law provides for the duties and powers of the governing board.
Present law provides that the Dept. of State shall include in its annual budget request a request
for funds necessary for support of the museum.  Further provides that funds appropriated by the
legislature to the department for operation of the museum shall be used solely for that purpose
and in accordance with the budget plan developed by the board to maintain accreditation
standards.
Present law provides that the department and the board may solicit and accept funds, government
grants, donations, and contributions of land, buildings, monies, relics, works of art, or other
property on behalf of and as additions to the museum either in the form of loans or in the form of
donations inter vivos or mortis causa.  Further provides that the board is granted authority of
deaccession with respect to any collection of the museum and is exempted from laws relative to
the sale or disposal of surplus property.
Present law provides that any collections of the museum may be lent in part.  Further provides
that collections shall be available for use in educational projects.
Present law provides that the museum and its governing board are placed within the Dept. of
State.
Proposed law repeals present law. Effective upon signature of governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action.
