Prior law provided for the establishment of the Garyville Timbermill Museum as a facility
in the parish of St. John the Baptist. Further provided that the museum would be a historical,
cultural, scientific, and technological educational institution whose primary purpose would
be to research, collect, preserve, and present, as an educational resource, documents,
artifacts, objects of art, and the like that reflect the social, cultural, and economic history of
the timber industry in La. and the St. John the Baptist Parish area in particular.
Prior law provided for the creation of the governing board of the museum. The board was
to be comprised of nine members with knowledge of and interest in timber and timber
production. Members of the board served without compensation. Further provided that the
domicile of the board was in the parish of St. John the Baptist.
Prior law provided for the duties and powers of the governing board.
Prior law provided that the Dept. of State would include in its annual budget request a
request for funds necessary for support of the museum. Further required that funds
appropriated by the legislature to the department for operation of the museum be used solely
for that purpose and in accordance with the budget plan developed by the board to maintain
accreditation standards.
Prior law authorized the department and the board to solicit and accept funds, government
grants, donations, and contributions of land, buildings, monies, relics, works of art, or other
property on behalf of and as additions to the museum either in the form of loans or in the
form of donations inter vivos or mortis causa. Further granted the board authority of
deaccession with respect to any collection of the museum and exempted it from laws relative
to the sale or disposal of surplus property.
Prior law authorized lending collections of the museum. Further provided that collections
would be available for use in educational projects.
Prior law placed the museum and its governing board within the Dept. of State.
New law repeals prior law.
