HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 47
BY REPRESENTATIVES KLECKLEY, DANAHAY, FRANKLIN, GEYMANN, GUINN,
HENSGENS, AND HILL AND SENATORS JOHNS, MORRISH, AND JOHN

CONDOLENCES:  Expresses condolences upon the death of Robert James Pumpelly
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Robert James Pumpelly and2
to recognize his outstanding achievements.3
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the4
Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the death of Robert James Pumpelly on Tuesday,5
January 15, 2013; and6
WHEREAS, Mr. Pumpelly was born in Augusta, Kansas, on May 23, 1919, and7
graduated from high school in Oklahoma City in 1936; and8
WHEREAS, Mr. Pumpelly served honorably in the United States Navy Air Force9
during Word War II for more than three years and was a pilot for over fifty years; and10
WHEREAS, Mr. Pumpelly served as Chairman of the Board of Pumpelly Oil, LLC11
and Pumpelly Tire, LLC and as president of Boy's Village, YMCA, Lake Charles Credit12
Bureau, Calcasieu Area Safety Counsel, Calcasieu Area Boy Scouts of America, and13
Louisiana Oil Marketers, Inc.; and14
WHEREAS, Mr. Pumpelly also served as a board member of the Calcasieu Area15
Chamber of Commerce, United Fund, Crime Stoppers, Louisiana Savings and Loan,16
Samaritan Counseling Center, Downtown Rotary Club, Gideon's International, Fourth17
Avenue Church of God, Foreman Reynaud YMCA, Calcasieu Cameron Association for18
Persons with Orthopedic Disabilities, and Mid-America Christian University; and19 HLS 13RS-350	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, Mr. Pumpelly was also a member of the American Legion, served as1
Sunday School superintendent, as a teacher and board member of Christ Community Church,2
and most recently attended Emmanuel Baptist Church; and3
WHEREAS, Mr. Pumpelly received numerous awards for his outstanding4
contributions to society, including Foreman Reynaud YMCA Man of the Year in 1982;5
Chamber of Commerce Civic Service Award in 1981; Rotarian of the Year, Downtown Club6
in 1960; Beta Gamma Sigma Recognition Award, McNeese State University in 1992; Lake7
Charles East Rotary, Jack Harris Award 1988; Angel Award, Blue Cross Blue Shield, 1997;8
Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Mid-America Christian University in 1981;9
Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award in 1975; Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizen Award in 1990;10
Della Krause Thielen Foundation Citizen of the Year and Founders Circle Award in 1998;11
Lake Charles Optimist Club in 1998; and YMBC Club  Citizen of the Year in 1982; and12
WHEREAS, Mr. Pumpelly married Vida Vincent in 1941, who preceded him in13
death, and he is survived by his wife Ruth Pumpelly; children Jane Brumby and Glen14
Pumpelly; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brother, Charles Pumpelly;15
and three sisters, Marie Arnett, Lois Hoyler, and Sylvia Dunn; and16
WHEREAS, with the death of Robert James Pumpelly, Louisiana has lost one of her17
finest citizens, a true gentleman who left an indelible mark on the lives of the many citizens18
whose lives he touched, and one who was a loving husband, father, and friend, and who will19
be deeply missed; and20
WHEREAS, although his death has left a tremendous void in his community and21
throughout the state, Mr. Pumpelly's memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of22
all who were fortunate enough to have known and loved him.23
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby24
express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Robert James Pumpelly, does25
hereby recognize and record for posterity his outstanding achievements and singular26
contributions, and does hereby extend true appreciation for his enduring legacy which will27
forever continue to be a source of deep pride and honor for his family, friends, colleagues,28
community, and the state of Louisiana.29 HLS 13RS-350	ORIGINAL

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted1
to the family of Robert James Pumpelly.2
