HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 160

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends LSU Honors College student Catherine Fontenot of
Basile on being named a Harry S. Truman Scholar
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Catherine Fontenot of Basile, a Louisiana State University Honors College2
student, upon being named a Harry S. Truman Scholar.3
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Catherine Fontenot of Basile, a Louisiana4
State University Honors College student, upon being named a Harry S. Truman Scholar; and5
WHEREAS, the Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by congress in6
1975 as the federal memorial to Harry S. Truman, the thirty-third president of the United7
States, and awards scholarships for college students to attend graduate school in preparation8
for careers in government or elsewhere in public service; and9
WHEREAS, Truman Scholars receive up to thirty thousand dollars for graduate10
study and priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate11
institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special12
internship opportunities within the federal government; and13
WHEREAS, one of only sixty-two students selected nationwide as Truman Scholars14
this year, Ms. Fontenot is an LSU Honors College student and a biological sciences major15
in the College of Science; and16
WHEREAS, Ms. Fontenot has distinguished herself as an outstanding scholar and17
citizen in a variety of endeavors, including researching primate genomes in Dr. Mark18
Batzer's Laboratory of Comparative Genomics, studying poverty as a Louisiana Service and19
Leadership Scholar, and working with the Volunteer Health Corps of Baton Rouge; and 20 HLS 13RS-3978	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, following her graduation from LSU in May of  2014, Ms. Fontenot1
plans to pursue degrees in medicine and public health, concentrating on internal medicine,2
infectious disease, and global health; and3
WHEREAS, Catherine Fontenot merits a special measure of appreciation for the4
tremendous pride and honor she brings to Louisiana State University and to her family,5
community, and state.6
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the7
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Catherine Fontenot of Basile, a Louisiana8
State University Honors College student, upon being named a Harry S. Truman Scholar,9
does hereby recognize and record for posterity her exceptional academic achievements and10
contributions to her fellow citizens, and does hereby extend to her best wishes for continued11
success and happiness in the future.12
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted13
to Catherine Fontenot.14
