HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 22
BY REPRESENTATIVE BROSSETT
A RESOLUTION
To commend Judge Karen Wells Roby on her recognition by the Greater New Orleans Louis
A. Martinet Legal Society for her many contributions to the state of Louisiana.
WHEREAS, Judge Karen Wells Roby has been a Magistrate Judge for the United
States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana for over thirteen years; and
WHEREAS, Judge Roby serves as an associate professor at Tulane University Law
School's Trial Advocacy Program, which is a semester-long series of simulations in trial
skills, and she also participates in Tulane's Civil Litigation Skills Training Program; in these
programs, she helps students develop courtroom skills, such as direct and cross-examination,
introduction of documents, working with expert testimony, and opening and closing
statements; and
WHEREAS, in August 2012, as a faculty member of Lawyers/Judges Without
Borders, Judge Roby traveled to Nairobi, Kenya, where she and twenty-three other lawyers
and judges brought the best United States practices in the area of case management and trial
procedure to magistrates, police prosecutors, and criminal defense counsel; and
WHEREAS, Judge Roby has been very active in teaching civics education and has
served as the coordinating Judge for the Eastern District's "Open Doors to Federal Courts
Program", a day-long civics education program held in the district court; and
WHEREAS, Judge Roby also serves as the coordinating judge for the Just the
Beginning Foundation/Louisiana State Bar Associations High School Intern Program, which
is a three-week intensive simulation law school program that is held every summer in New
Orleans for high school juniors and seniors interested in law as a profession; and
WHEREAS, Judge Roby is also the former president of the Louisiana Center for
Civic Education's Board of Directors, a nonprofit that tailors interactive civics education
programs to students from elementary school to high school throughout the state; and ENROLLEDHR NO. 22

WHEREAS, Judge Roby is the cochair of the American Bar Association Section of
Litigation, Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, and a member of the Federal Bar
Association's Ethics Committee; and
WHEREAS, Judge Roby frequently speaks on legal topics throughout the United
States, ranging from mediation skills and effectiveness, to electronic discovery, social media
and the law, ethical considerations in settlement conferences, and practical tips for the
litigator; and
WHEREAS, Judge Roby is also the author of several published articles in the areas
of social media and ethics, settlement and ethics, and attorney fees; and
WHEREAS, on April 6, 2013, at its annual gala, the Greater New Orleans Louis A.
Martinet Legal Society, Inc., honored Judge Roby for her many significant achievements;
and
WHEREAS, Judge Roby merits a special measure of commendation for the
tremendous pride and honor that she brings to her family and friends, her community, and
the state of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Honorable Karen Wells Roby for her
recognition by the Greater New Orleans Louis A. Martinet Legal Society, Inc., does hereby
record for posterity her noteworthy ascension in the legal field and her outstanding
contributions to both the legal profession and her fellow citizens, and extends to her best
wishes for continued success and happiness in all her future endeavors. 
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be
transmitted to the Honorable Karen Wells Roby.
