HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 73
BY REPRESENTATIVE JEFFERSON
COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough on becoming the seventh
president of Dillard University
A RESOLUTION1
To commend and congratulate Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough on becoming the seventh president2
of Dillard University.3
WHEREAS, Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough began his appointment as the seventh4
president of Dillard University as well as one of the youngest college presidents in the nation5
on July 1, 2012; and6
WHEREAS, he earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Georgia, a7
Master of Science from Miami University in Ohio, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher8
Education from Georgia State University; and9
WHEREAS, Dr. Kimbrough served in administrative capacities at Albany State10
University, Old Dominion University, Georgia State University, and Emory University; and11
WHEREAS, he most recently served as the president of Philander Smith College in12
Little Rock, Arkansas and is known as the Hip-Hop President; and13
WHEREAS, Dr. Kimbrough serves on several national boards and committees,14
including the United Negro College Fund and maintains active memberships in higher15
education associations including the National Association of Student Personnel16
Administrators,  Association of Fraternity Advisory, and Brothers of the Academy; and17
WHEREAS, he has given over five hundred presentations on fraternalism life at18
campuses and conferences across the country and is the author of the book, Black Greek19
101: The Culture, Customs, and Challenges of Black Fraternities and Sororities, which was20
an Essence magazine top 10 best seller and is currently in its tenth printing; and21 HLS 13RS-2282	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, Dr. Kimbrough has been recognized for his research and writings on1
HBCUs and African American men in college and has also been noted for his active use of2
social media to engage students in articles in The Chronicle of Higher Education, CASE3
Currents, and Arkansas Life; and4
WHEREAS, he was named by Diverse Issues in Higher Education as one of 25 to5
Watch and in 2010, he made the coveted Ebony Magazine Power list of 100 doers and6
influencers in the African American community; and7
WHEREAS, the students, faculty, and staff of Dillard University welcomed8
Dr. Kimbrough to the helm of their campuses and look forward to his tenure as president;9
and10
WHEREAS, Dr. Kimbrough merits a special measure of commendation upon his11
selection as President of Dillard University.12
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the13
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough14
upon his appointment as the seventh president of Dillard University, hereby recognizes and15
records for posterity his exemplary leadership, and hereby extends to him best wishes for16
continuing success as the president of Dillard University.17
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to18
Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough.19
