To commend Louisiana Teen Challenge for its successful ministry to youth, adults and families with its effective and comprehensive Christian, Bible based solution to life-controlling drug and alcohol addictions in order that participants may become productive members of society. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend Louisiana Teen Challenge for its service to the people of Louisiana through2 its mission to offer a comprehensive, Bible based program of recovery and hope to3 those Louisiana citizens who suffer from life-controlling drug and alcohol4 addictions.5 WHEREAS, Louisiana Teen Challenge provides youth, adults and families with an6 effective and comprehensive Christian faith-based solution to life-controlling drug and7 alcohol problems in order that participants may become productive members of society; and8 WHEREAS, by applying biblical principles, Louisiana Teen Challenge endeavors9 to help people become mentally sound, emotionally balanced, socially adjusted, physically10 well, and spiritually alive; and11 WHEREAS, through committed staff and effective programs, Louisiana Teen12 Challenge seeks to produce graduates who function responsibly and productively in society,13 and who have healthy relationships in the workplace, family, church and community; and14 WHEREAS, Teen Challenge has been in Louisiana since 1987, beginning with the15 Greater New Orleans Teen Challenge; and16 WHEREAS, Louisiana Teen Challenge has been able to expand in many additional17 locations in the state, including Arnaudville, Dodson, Minden, Ruston, Shreveport, and18 SCR NO. 131 SLS 13RS-3277 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 another in Winnfield; and1 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Teen Challenge offers an eighteen month residential2 program for men, women, boys, or girls designed to help them learn to live drug-free lives;3 and4 WHEREAS, these programs are discipline-oriented and offer a balance of Bible5 classes, work assignments, and recreation; and6 WHEREAS, Louisiana Teen Challenge is part of Teen Challenge International which7 was started in Brooklyn, New York, in 1958 by Rev. David Wilkerson, in response to an8 article in LIFE magazine about seven teenagers who were on trial for murder related to a9 gang fight where the teens had beaten a young man to death; and10 WHEREAS, out of that tragedy of the death of this young man and through the grace11 of God, Wilkerson began to work full-time with teenage gang members; and12 WHEREAS, there are over 260 Teen Challenge programs in the United States and13 another 1200 in other countries around the world. A study completed by the research group,14 the National Institute of Drug Abuse, in 1974 evidenced that Teen Challenge has an 86%15 success rate seven years after graduation from the program and other studies have been16 completed since that time that confirmed those findings.17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 18 commend Louisiana Teen Challenge for its service to the people of Louisiana through its19 mission to offer a comprehensive, Bible based program of recovery and hope to those20 Louisiana citizens who suffer from life-controlling drug and alcohol addictions.21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to22 Louisiana Teen Challenge.23 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Carla S.
