Urges and requests the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to establish and sanction the competitive sport of tournament bass fishing. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To urge and request the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to establish and2 sanction the competitive sport of tournament bass fishing.3 WHEREAS, the mission of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association4 (LHSAA) is to direct and regulate the interscholastic athletics of member schools while5 promoting fair and equitable competition; and6 WHEREAS, the LHSAA currently sanctions one hundred nine championships and7 twenty-five sports; and8 WHEREAS, fishing is as much a part of Louisiana's culture as is football and as9 much a pastime of Louisianians as is baseball; and 10 WHEREAS, many of Louisiana's high school students already participate in bass11 fishing, both on a recreational and competitive level; and12 WHEREAS, The Bass Federation's Louisiana chapter recently sponsored a state bass13 fishing tournament at Caddo Lake that attracted over forty teams representing approximately14 twenty LHSAA member schools; and15 WHEREAS, the Association of Louisiana Bass Clubs recently unanimously16 approved adding a junior division to its ranks with the hope of attracting high school teams17 as members; and18 SCR NO. 22 SLS 13RS-121 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the high school athletic associations in Illinois, Kentucky, and South1 Carolina currently sanction bass fishing as a championship sport; and2 WHEREAS, by sanctioning bass fishing as a competitive sport, the LHSAA would3 create another avenue for students to participate in interscholastic competition. 4 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby5 urge and request the Louisiana High School Athletic Association to establish and sanction6 the competitive sport of tournament bass fishing.7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to8 LHSAA Commissioner Kenny Henderson.9 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Alan Miller.
