Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2013 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 69 BY SENATORS LONG, GALLOT AND WALSWORTH AND REPRESENTATI VES BROWN, COX AND HOWARD A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend and congratulate Northwestern State University Head Coach Mike McConathy for being the most winning coach in Louisiana men's collegiate basketball history. WHEREAS, it is with great pride that the citizens of Louisiana and the Legislature of Louisiana have learned of the exciting news that Northwestern State University Demon head basketball coach Mike McConathy has recently become the king of Louisiana men's college basketball career wins; and WHEREAS, Northwestern State demons basketball celebrated its centennial this season, and there could not have been a more appropriate coach to be in charge this year than head coach Mike McConathy who has engineered many of the greatest accomplishments in the program's rich history, along with his father, uncles and sons all having their places in the Northwestern University Demon basketball lore; and WHEREAS, the 2012-2013 season played out just right, and then some, with one of the most exciting, entertaining teams in the school's history, finishing with a 23-9 record, posting the second biggest win total ever at Northwestern, ranking among the nation's top 100 teams in eleven NCAA statistical categories, including second nationally in scoring averaging 80 points per game and sixth in steals averaging 9.8 per game; and WHEREAS, Coach Mike McConathy became the men's college basketball coach with the most wins in Louisiana history with the combining of his 352 career victories at Bossier Parish Community College over sixteen seasons with the 223 wins in fourteen seasons at Northwestern State University, surpassing all other Louisiana collegiate basketball coaches with a career high of 575 wins in thirty seasons; and WHEREAS, the demons have won eighty-four percent (37-7) of their home games in the last three seasons, two of the four best win totals in a season in the school's history have come in the last seven years with twenty games televised nationally, and an additional twenty-six regional television appearances in the last fourteen seasons at Northwestern State University; and SCR NO. 69 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, during his coaching career, he has not only coached these young men to numerous victories on the court, he has inspired them to achieve academic success with eighty-five percent of the seniors under his tutelage graduating; and WHEREAS, because Coach Mike McConathy has always instilled and promoted educational values in his players, their academic success has resulted in Northwestern State University ranking among the state, Southland Conference, and even nationally consistently as a leader in NCAA's Academic Progress Rate and in Graduation Success Rate; and WHEREAS, he has seven Southland Tournament Championship game appearances in fourteen years, three NCAA Tournament berths and two NCAA Tournament wins; and WHEREAS, Coach Mike McConathy has been on ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 voting panel for the last five seasons and was South Central Region coaches' advisory representative for the NCAA Selection Process for the last three seasons; and WHEREAS, Coach Mike McConathy was the 2012 recipient of the Guardian Game Pillar Award for Education from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) which is among the most prestigious awards presented by the NABC; and WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depends, in great measure, upon the dedication of great men and coaches like Coach Mike McConathy who inspire the young men they coach to strive to be best both on and off the court. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby honor, acknowledge, commend and congratulate Coach Mike McConathy for being the most winning coach in Louisiana men's collegiate basketball history. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be presented to Coach Mike McConathy. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
