SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 74
BY SENATORS GARY SMITH AND BROWN AND REPRESENTATI VES GAINES,
MILLER AND WILLMOTT 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Dr. Rodney Roy Lafon for his eighteen years of service
as superintendent of the St. Charles Parish public school system on the occasion of his
retirement.
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend Dr. Rodney Roy Lafon for his eighteen years of service as superintendent of2
the St. Charles Parish public school system and to recognize him upon the occasion3
of his retirement.4
WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon recently announced his retirement as superintendent of the5
St. Charles Parish public school system, effective July 1, 2013; and 6
WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon has dedicated himself to a lifelong pursuit of continuous7
education, having graduated from Warren Easton High School; earning a bachelor of music8
education and masters in education from Loyola University; earning thirty plus hours in9
education from Tulane University, Xavier University, the University of New Orleans,10
Nicholls State University, and Loyola University;  and completing his doctorate in education11
from Nova University; and12
WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon has been an educator for more than thirty-eight years; and13
WHEREAS, the St. Charles Parish School Board appointed Dr. Lafon as its14
superintendent in 1995; and15
WHEREAS, prior to being named the system's superintendent, he served the people16
of St. Charles Parish as a music teacher, assistant principal of J.B. Martin Middle School,17
principal at Allemands and Luling Elementary schools, restructuring coordinator for the St.18 SCR NO. 74

Charles Parish public school system, and assistant superintendent; and1
WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon has received many honors for his leadership, including the2
Louisiana Reading Association's Principal of the Year in 1989; and3
WHEREAS, in 1996 he was appointed by Governor Foster to serve on the Louisiana4
LEARN Commission; and5
WHEREAS, in 2000 the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools recognized6
Dr. Lafon by presenting him with the Distinguished Educational Leadership Award; and7
WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon was named Louisiana's 2002 Superintendent of the Year; and8
WHEREAS, in 2003 he served as the president of the Louisiana Association of9
School Executives; and10
WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon has been married to his loving wife Joan for thirty eight11
years; and 12
WHEREAS, his tireless service to the children and families of St. Charles Parish is13
appreciated and his impending retirement is well deserved.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby15
commend Dr. Rodney Roy Lafon for his eighteen years of service as superintendent of the16
St. Charles Parish public school system and to recognize him upon the occasion of his17
retirement.18
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Dr.19
Rodney Roy Lafon.20
