Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2013 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 74 BY SENATORS GARY SMITH AND BROWN AND REPRESENTATI VES GAINES, MILLER AND WILLMOTT A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend Dr. Rodney Roy Lafon for his eighteen years of service as superintendent of the St. Charles Parish public school system and to recognize him upon the occasion of his retirement. WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon recently announced his retirement as superintendent of the St. Charles Parish public school system, effective July 1, 2013; and WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon has dedicated himself to a lifelong pursuit of continuous education, having graduated from Warren Easton High School; earning a bachelor's degree in music education and master's degree in education from Loyola University; earning thirty plus hours in education from Tulane University, Xavier University, the University of New Orleans, Nicholls State University, and Loyola University; and completing his doctorate in education from Nova University; and WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon has been an educator for more than thirty-eight years; and WHEREAS, the St. Charles Parish School Board appointed Dr. Lafon as its superintendent in 1995; and WHEREAS, prior to being named the system's superintendent, he served the people of St. Charles Parish as a music teacher, assistant principal of J.B. Martin Middle School, principal at Allemands and Luling Elementary schools, restructuring coordinator for the St. Charles Parish public school system, and assistant superintendent; and WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon has received many honors for his leadership, including the Louisiana Reading Association's Principal of the Year in 1989; and WHEREAS, in 1996 he was appointed by Governor Foster to serve on the Louisiana LEARN Commission; and WHEREAS, in 2000 the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools recognized Dr. Lafon by presenting him with the Distinguished Educational Leadership Award; and SCR NO. 74 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon was named Louisiana's 2002 Superintendent of the Year; and WHEREAS, in 2003 he served as the president of the Louisiana Association of School Executives; and WHEREAS, Dr. Lafon has been married to his loving wife Joan for thirty-eight years; and WHEREAS, his tireless service to the children and families of St. Charles Parish is appreciated and his impending retirement is well deserved. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Dr. Rodney Roy Lafon for his eighteen years of service as superintendent of the St. Charles Parish public school system and to recognize him upon the occasion of his retirement.
