Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2013 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 122 BY SENATOR WARD A RESOLUTION To commend and congratulate the Little Rock Baptist Church in Slaughter on its one hundred fiftieth anniversary. WHEREAS, Little Rock Baptist Church was organized in 1863; and WHEREAS, reminiscent of the preparation of Noah, the persistence of Moses, the patience of Job and the prayer of Nehemiah, a congregation emerged, under the leadership of the late Reverend Henry Carter on September 23, 1863; and WHEREAS, Deacon Charley Gray, Brother Caleb Carter, and Brother Isaac Stone along with Reverend Carter, purchased one acre of land from G.M. Dramgalle for $124.30 and the young congregation erected a small frame building; and WHEREAS, over sixty years later, in 1929, the church and all of its records were destroyed by a fire; and WHEREAS, approximately one year later, in 1930, the church was rebuilt under the headship of the Reverend D.W. Williams and the board of directors; and WHEREAS, in 1938, under the direction of the Reverend S.P. Nelson, the church, still a wood-frame building was again remodeled, and with God's blessing, twenty-one years later, in 1959, the present building was constructed under the direction of Reverend S.P. Nelson and the board of directors; and WHEREAS, on May 6, 1974, some fifteen years later, a half acre of land was purchased for eight hundred dollars, under the leadership of the Reverend Isaiah Mitchell and the board of directors: Deacon Norwood Thornton, Deacon Leroy Johnson, and Brother Idell Morrison; and WHEREAS, Little Rock Baptist Church stands on the shoulders of these and other fine Christian soldiers whose names and deeds were written into the Book of Life by the hand of Almighty God, the thriving, vibrant Little Rock that we know today is a living testament to their obedience, dedication, and faith; and SR NO. 122 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, after the death of Isaiah Mitchell, Bishop Harris Hayes was elected in 1987, and under his leadership the church has continued to grow and prosper as various church ministries have flourished, to name a few, the youth department, pastor aide ministries, and the male choir and the church has been remodeled, classrooms have been built, and the church is in the process of liquidating the mortgage; and WHEREAS, the sons and daughters of the ministry that came under the instruction of Bishop Harris Hayes are faithful and numerous; and WHEREAS, in 2011, Reverend Marvin Moore was elected and continues to strive to fulfill the missions at Little Rock Baptist Church where he is committed to continuing the legacy of the founders; and WHEREAS, Little Rock Baptist Church continues to strive to fulfill its mission of reaching out to help and strengthen those in need as it celebrates its 150 th anniversary; and WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depends, in great measure, upon the faithful dedication of people like the founders, forefathers, and members of churches like Little Rock Baptist Church. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Little Rock Baptist Church on one hundred fifty years of rich history and the faithful foundation upon which it was built and wishes it continued growth and prosperity. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Little Rock Baptist Church. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
