as University of New Orleans Day at the state
capitol.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend the University of New Orleans and to declare Thursday, May 30, 2013, as2
UNO Day at the Louisiana Senate.3
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans (UNO) opened its doors in 1958 as the4
first fully integrated public university in the Southeastern United States; and5
WHEREAS, UNO is the most diverse public university in Louisiana; and6
WHEREAS, UNO has graduated over 90,000 students; and7
WHEREAS, UNO has educated students from all 64 parishes, all 50 states and over8
90 countries; and9
WHEREAS, UNO has extended its professional reach and academic influence10
nationally and internationally, with high-quality academic programs in Austria, the Czech11
Republic, France, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico; and12
WHEREAS, UNO has developed numerous award-winning academic programs of13
national distinction, including accounting, chemistry, creative writing, film and video, jazz14
studies, naval architecture, and hotel, restaurant, and tourism administration; and15
WHEREAS, UNO faculty members, distinguished professors, and students have16
achieved national recognition; and17
WHEREAS, UNO students, faculty, and alumni have launched active and energetic18 SR NO. 136

initiatives in support of the university's academic and community objectives, including its1
Charter School Network; and2
WHEREAS, UNO has been named in the top twenty "Most Popular National3
Universities by U.S. News and World Report"; and4
WHEREAS, on December 6, 2011, the University of New Orleans officially became5
part of the University of Louisiana system; and6
WHEREAS, culturally, socially, economically, and intellectually, the University of7
New Orleans is one of the major assets of the City of New Orleans and the State of8
Louisiana; and9
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day in honor of the University of10
New Orleans.11
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana12
hereby commends the University of New Orleans for its significant and lasting contributions13
to the state and hereby declares Thursday, May 30, 2013, as UNO Day at the Louisiana14
Senate.15
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Peter16
J. Fos, President of the University of New Orleans.17
