SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 136

A RESOLUTION
To commend the University of New Orleans and to declare Thursday, May 30, 2013, as
UNO Day at the Louisiana Senate.
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans (UNO) opened its doors in 1958 as the
first fully integrated public university in the Southeastern United States; and
WHEREAS, UNO is the most diverse public university in Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, UNO has graduated over 90,000 students; and
WHEREAS, UNO has educated students from all 64 parishes, all 50 states and over
90 countries; and
WHEREAS, UNO has extended its professional reach and academic influence
nationally and internationally, with high-quality academic programs in Austria, the Czech
Republic, France, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico; and
WHEREAS, UNO has developed numerous award-winning academic programs of
national distinction, including accounting, chemistry, creative writing, film and video, jazz
studies, naval architecture, and hotel, restaurant, and tourism administration; and
WHEREAS, UNO faculty members, distinguished professors, and students have
achieved national recognition; and
WHEREAS, UNO students, faculty, and alumni have launched active and energetic
initiatives in support of the university's academic and community objectives, including its
Charter School Network; and
WHEREAS, UNO has been named in the top twenty "Most Popular National
Universities by U.S. News and World Report"; and
WHEREAS, on December 6, 2011, the University of New Orleans officially became
part of the University of Louisiana system; and
WHEREAS, culturally, socially, economically, and intellectually, the University of
New Orleans is one of the major assets of the City of New Orleans and the State of

WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day in honor of the University of
New Orleans.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
hereby commends the University of New Orleans for its significant and lasting contributions
to the state and hereby declares Thursday, May 30, 2013, as UNO Day at the Louisiana
Senate.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Peter
J. Fos, President of the University of New Orleans.
