Commends and congratulates Chanda Rubin for being named to the 2013 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. A RESOLUTION1 To commend Chanda Rubin on being named to the 2013 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame2 Induction Class.3 WHEREAS, each year Louisiana's sports writers select a limited number of athletes,4 past or present, who have become figures of national and international renown to be5 regarded as the state's immortals in the sphere of athletes and enshrined in the Louisiana6 Sports Hall of Fame; and7 WHEREAS, the 2013 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Class includes Lafayette native8 and tennis star Chanda Rubin; and9 WHEREAS, Ms. Rubin began playing tennis at age five and competed in her first10 tournament at age seven, and in 1988, at the tender age of eleven, she won the United States11 Tennis Association's Junior National Championship Girls' Division, age 12 and under; and12 WHEREAS, in 1989, Ms. Rubin won her second USTA Junior National13 Championship, this time in the Girls' Division age 14 and under, and a short two years later,14 was chosen for the national team by the USTA, the youngest player ever to be selected; and15 WHEREAS, in 1992, at age fifteen, Ms. Rubin won the Wimbledon Girls' Singles16 Championship, a major win, and turned pro that same year; and17 WHEREAS, over the next thirteen years, Ms. Rubin became an international star and18 SR NO. 150 SLS 13RS-2412 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 a frequent contender for the most prized titles in women's tennis, highlighted by capturing1 a Grand Slam win in doubles at the 1996 Australian Open with Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario;2 and3 WHEREAS, Ms. Rubin reached a career high ranking of sixth in the world, reached4 the fourth round or better in all four Grand Slam tournaments, and won seven Women's5 Tennis Association singles titles, ten WTA doubles titles and two International Tennis6 Association titles; and7 WHEREAS, in 1997, Ms. Rubin teamed up with Justin Gimelstob to win the8 Hopman Cup, first ever win for the United States, and she was also a member of the U.S.9 Fed Cup team from 1995-1997 and 1999-2004, the U.S. Olympic Team in 1996 and 2004,10 and the U.S. Pan-American Team in 1995, where she won silver and bronze medals; and11 WHEREAS, in addition to her exciting wins, Ms. Rubin has also been the recipient12 of numerous awards including: 1995 American Tennis Association Athlete of the Year; 199613 USTA Female Athlete of the Year; 1996 US Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the14 Month, and thereafter Female Athlete of the Year; 1995 WTA's Most Improved Player15 Award; 1997 Arthur Ashe Leadership Award; 1998 USA Magazine's Most Caring Athlete16 Award; 2002 Hormel Foods/Family Circle Player Who Makes a Difference Award; 200317 USTA Service Bowl Award; 2008 Gene Scott Renaissance Award; 2008 International Lawn18 Tennis Danzig Trophy; and 2009 Southern Tennis Hall of Fame Inductee; and19 WHEREAS, Chanda Rubin truly possesses the character, skills and talents worthy20 of being named to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. 21 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana22 does hereby commend and congratulate Chanda Rubin on being named to the 201323 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class.24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to25 Chanda Rubin.26 SR NO. 150 SLS 13RS-2412 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 3 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Dawn Romero Watson.
