Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2013 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 150 BY SENATOR LONG A RESOLUTION To commend Chanda Rubin on being named to the 2013 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. WHEREAS, each year Louisiana's sports writers select a limited number of athletes, past or present, who have become figures of national and international renown to be regarded as the state's immortals in the sphere of athletes and enshrined in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, the 2013 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Class includes Lafayette native and tennis star Chanda Rubin; and WHEREAS, Ms. Rubin began playing tennis at age five and competed in her first tournament at age seven, and in 1988, at the tender age of eleven, she won the United States Tennis Association's Junior National Championship Girls' Division, age 12 and under; and WHEREAS, in 1989, Ms. Rubin won her second USTA Junior National Championship, this time in the Girls' Division age 14 and under, and a short two years later, was chosen for the national team by the USTA, the youngest player ever to be selected; and WHEREAS, in 1992, at age fifteen, Ms. Rubin won the Wimbledon Girls' Singles Championship, a major win, and turned pro that same year; and WHEREAS, over the next thirteen years, Ms. Rubin became an international star and a frequent contender for the most prized titles in women's tennis, highlighted by capturing a Grand Slam win in doubles at the 1996 Australian Open with Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario; and WHEREAS, Ms. Rubin reached a career high ranking of sixth in the world, reached the fourth round or better in all four Grand Slam tournaments, and won seven Women's Tennis Association singles titles, ten WTA doubles titles and two International Tennis Association titles; and WHEREAS, in 1997, Ms. Rubin teamed up with Justin Gimelstob to win the Hopman Cup, first ever win for the United States, and she was also a member of the U.S. SR NO. 150 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 Fed Cup team from 1995-1997 and 1999-2004, the U.S. Olympic Team in 1996 and 2004, and the U.S. Pan-American Team in 1995, where she won silver and bronze medals; and WHEREAS, in addition to her exciting wins, Ms. Rubin has also been the recipient of numerous awards including: 1995 American Tennis Association Athlete of the Year; 1996 USTA Female Athlete of the Year; 1996 US Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the Month, and thereafter Female Athlete of the Year; 1995 WTA's Most Improved Player Award; 1997 Arthur Ashe Leadership Award; 1998 USA Magazine's Most Caring Athlete Award; 2002 Hormel Foods/Family Circle Player Who Makes a Difference Award; 2003 USTA Service Bowl Award; 2008 Gene Scott Renaissance Award; 2008 International Lawn Tennis Danzig Trophy; and 2009 Southern Tennis Hall of Fame Inductee; and WHEREAS, Chanda Rubin truly possesses the character, skills and talents worthy of being named to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Chanda Rubin on being named to the 2013 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Chanda Rubin. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
