SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 205
BY SENATOR PETERSON 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Dr. Benjamin Sachs, dean of the School of Medicine,
for his leadership and activities at Tulane University School of Medicine.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Dr. Benjamin Sachs for his tremendous contribution to education and2
leadership at Tulane University School of Medicine and for his service as dean of the3
School of Medicine.4
WHEREAS, as a native of London and the son of Holocaust survivors, Dr. Benjamin5
Sachs graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, now Imperial College,6
London and earned a degree in public health at the University of Toronto; and 7
WHEREAS, prior to moving to New Orleans, Dr. Sachs served as professor of8
obstetrics and gynecology at Harvard Medical School for twenty-nine years and chairman9
of obstetrics and gynecology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston,10
Massachusetts; and11
WHEREAS, in an interview Dr. Sachs, stated that the prospect of helping Tulane and12
the city of New Orleans rebuild after hurricanes Katrina and Rita had been a major factor in13
persuading him to accept the position as dean of the School of Medicine in November, 2007;14
and 15
WHEREAS, during his tenure at Tulane, Dean Sachs recruited nineteen new leaders,16
including ten department heads while applications to the medical school have increased by17
forty-seven percent and the entrance examination scores for students entering the medical18 SR NO. 205

school have increased significantly, and federally funded research has increased by fifteen1
percent; and2
WHEREAS, Dean Sachs is a true humanitarian, showing compassion for his fellow3
man and the underprivileged, has helped launch a network of clinics delivering primary and4
preventative care to people in some of Boston's poorest neighborhoods and continued to5
assist the delivery of care in New Orleans in conjunction with Dr. Karen DeSalvo at Tulane6
University; and7
WHEREAS, this service network of clinics gained national attention garnering8
support for funding and collaboration from Johnson & Johnson, Qatar, LSU, the Daughters9
of Charity, Xavier University, Loyola University, Delgado Community College's Charity10
School of Nursing, and the federal government; and11
WHEREAS, by 2010 this network of clinics was treating over 200,000 people every12
year; and13
WHEREAS, in honor of the clinic's achievement, Tulane's medical school received14
the Spencer Foreman Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Association of15
American Medical Colleges, which represents 150 medical schools in the United States and16
Canada; and17
WHEREAS, Dean Sachs has been a real champion for helping leaders in the18
community recognize the value of primary medical care to the underprivileged and the entire19
community.20
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana21
does hereby commend Dr. Benjamin Sachs, dean of the Tulane University School of22
Medicine, for his tremendous contribution to the practice of medicine, medical education,23
Tulane University and the state of Louisiana.24
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Dean25
