Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2013 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 205 BY SENATORS PETERSON, ADLEY, ALARIO, ALLAIN, AMEDEE, APPEL, BROOME, BROWN, BUFFI NGTON, CHABERT, CL AITOR, CORTEZ, CROWE, DONAHUE, DORSEY-COLOMB, ERDEY, GALLOT, GUILLORY, HEITMEIER, JOHNS, KOSTELKA, LAFLEUR, LONG, MARTINY, MILLS, MORRELL, MORRISH, MURRAY, NEVERS, PEACOCK, PERRY, RISER, GARY SMITH, JOHN SMITH, TARVER, THOMPSON, WALSWORTH, WARD AND WHITE A RESOLUTION To commend Dr. Benjamin Sachs for his tremendous contribution to education and leadership at Tulane University School of Medicine and for his service as dean of the School of Medicine. WHEREAS, as a native of London and the son of Holocaust survivors, Dr. Benjamin Sachs graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, now Imperial College, London and earned a degree in public health at the University of Toronto; and WHEREAS, prior to moving to New Orleans, Dr. Sachs served as professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Harvard Medical School for twenty-nine years and chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts; and WHEREAS, in an interview Dr. Sachs, stated that the prospect of helping Tulane and the city of New Orleans rebuild after hurricanes Katrina and Rita had been a major factor in persuading him to accept the position as dean of the School of Medicine in November 2007; and WHEREAS, during his tenure at Tulane, Dean Sachs recruited nineteen new leaders, including ten department heads while applications to the medical school have increased by forty-seven percent and the entrance examination scores for students entering the medical school have increased significantly, and federally funded research has increased by fifteen percent; and SR NO. 205 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, Dean Sachs, a true humanitarian who shows compassion for his fellow man and the underprivileged, has helped launch a network of clinics delivering primary and preventative care to people in some of Boston's poorest neighborhoods and continued to assist the delivery of care in New Orleans in conjunction with Dr. Karen DeSalvo at Tulane University; and WHEREAS, this service network of clinics gained national attention garnering support for funding and collaboration from Johnson & Johnson, Qatar, LSU, the Daughters of Charity, Xavier University, Loyola University, Delgado Community College's Charity School of Nursing, and the federal government; and WHEREAS, by 2010 this network of clinics was treating over 200,000 people every year; and WHEREAS, in honor of the clinic's achievement, Tulane's medical school received the Spencer Foreman Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Association of American Medical Colleges, which represents 150 medical schools in the United States and Canada; and WHEREAS, Dean Sachs has been a real champion for helping leaders in the community recognize the value of primary medical care to the underprivileged and the entire community. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Dr. Benjamin Sachs, dean of the Tulane University School of Medicine, for his tremendous contribution to the practice of medicine, medical education, Tulane University and the state of Louisiana. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Dean Benjamin Sachs. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
