Commends Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for 100 years of service and recognizes Wednesday, April 17, 2013, as the twenty-ninth annual "Red and White" Day. A RESOLUTION1 To commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated for one hundred years of public2 service and recognize Wednesday, April 17, 2013, as the twenty-ninth annual "Red3 and White" Day.4 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated,5 for its outstanding achievements and generous community service for one hundred years and6 to recognize Wednesday, April 17, 2013, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated's "Red7 and White" Day; and8 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by9 twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University who were eager to use their collective10 strength to promote academic excellence, to provide scholarships and support to those in11 need, to educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy,12 and to highlight issues and find solutions to problems in their communities; and13 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrates its centennial anniversary of14 exercising its collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance15 to the community; and16 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 and is a private,17 nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs18 SR NO. 26 SLS 13RS-473 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 in local communities and throughout the world; and1 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is the largest African-2 American Greek letter sorority, a sisterhood of more than two hundred thousand3 predominately African-American college-educated women, comprised of over nine hundred4 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the5 Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and6 WHEREAS, the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, stand on the7 shoulders of giants, such as Senator Diana E. Bajoie, Representative Renee Gill Pratt,8 Representative Pinkie Carolyn Wilkerson, Representative Rosalind Peychaud,9 Representative Jalila Jefferson Bullock, Senator Cheryl Gray Evans, and Senator Karen10 Carter Peterson who have left an incredible imprint on this state's history; and11 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, uses its Five-Point Program12 Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and13 Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement to14 uplift, encourage, and develop the global community; and15 WHEREAS, the organizational structure and governance of Delta Sigma Theta16 Sorority, Incorporated is invested in the Grand Chapter, which meets at a national17 convention biennially, and regional conferences are held in the seven geographic regions of18 the organization during non-convention years; and19 WHEREAS, the success of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated's public service20 programs have depended upon the commendation for their commitment to community21 service and academic achievement as well as their quest for excellence in all endeavors in22 their lives.23 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana24 does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 17, 2013, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,25 Incorporated's "Red and White" Day, does hereby commend the women of Delta Sigma26 Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their exceptional achievements and manifold contributions,27 and does hereby extend enduring appreciation to the organization and its members for the28 tremendous honor and pride that they bring to their local communities, the state of29 Louisiana, and the United States of America.30 SR NO. 26 SLS 13RS-473 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 1 the president of the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to the2 regional director for the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.3 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by J.
