Extends condolences on the repatriation and burial of the remains of Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Army Lt. Col. Don C. Faith. A RESOLUTION1 To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana to the2 family of United States Army Lieutenant Colonel Don C. Faith upon the repatriation3 of his remains from an unmarked grave in enemy territory, his long journey home4 and his burial with full military honors befitting a recipient of the Medal of Honor5 in Arlington National Cemetery on April 17, 2013.6 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Faith was a native of Washington, Indiana, and came from a7 family with many ties to the military, but he was found medically unfit to attend the U.S.8 Military Academy at West Point, so he graduated from Georgetown University in June,9 1941, and joined the Army soon afterward; and10 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Faith was assigned to the legendary 82 nd Airborne Division and11 he remained with the All-American unit for the rest of World War II, participating in all four12 combat parachute assaults the division made during the war; and13 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Faith was awarded decorations for combat valor, four stars on14 his jump wings, the first award of the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Arrowhead15 for his airborne assaults, and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel; and16 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Faith remained in the Army after WWII and was assigned to17 the 7 th Infantry Division in Japan as a battalion commander, but the outbreak of the Korean18 SR NO. 74 SLS 13RS-1349 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 War in the summer of 1950 sent him and the division to the Korean Peninsula; and1 WHEREAS, in November, 1950, Lt. Col. Faith and a small task force found2 themselves trapped on the shore of the Chosin Reservoir vastly outnumbered as wave after3 wave of Chinese communist forces overran their position and he was eventually forced to4 take command of the task force as a result of his superiors being killed; and5 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Faith gallantly led his men in a breakout maneuver until he was6 mortally wounded himself and was placed in a truck for evacuation South to friendly lines,7 but the truck was badly shot up en route and abandoned and Lt. Col. Faith's body was left8 behind; and9 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Faith's remains were recovered sixty-two years later; and 10 WHEREAS, his daughter, Barbara Ann "Bobbie" Broyles, a long-time resident of11 Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was only four-years old when her father died, and she is very12 grateful that his story is being told and that now he rests in peace with other heroes interred13 in a place of great honor, Arlington National Cemetery; and14 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Faith's award and decorations include the Medal of Honor, the15 Silver Star with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart16 with oak leaf cluster, the World War II Victory Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United17 Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the18 Korean War Service Medal, the Combat Parachutist Badge with four stars, the Bronze19 Arrowhead Device for participation in airborne assaults, and the Combat Infantryman Badge20 with star, indicating award in two wars.21 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana22 does hereby extend its deepest and most respectful condolences to the family of United23 States Army Lieutenant Colonel Don C.
