HOUSE BILL NO. 106

AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 32:53(A) and to repeal R.S. 47:507, relative to motor vehicle2
license plates; to provide for the proper display of license plates; and to provide for3
related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1.  R.S. 32:53(A) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:6
ยง53.  Proper equipment required on vehicles; display of plate7
A.(1) No person shall drive or move, nor cause or knowingly permit any8
vehicle owned or controlled by him to be driven or moved, on any highway of this9
state, at any time, any vehicle or combination of vehicles which is in such unsafe10
condition as to endanger any person or property, or which does not contain those11
parts or is not at all times equipped with such lamps and other equipment, in proper12
condition and adjustment, as required in this Chapter, or which is constructed or13
equipped in any manner in violation of this Chapter, and no person shall do any act14
forbidden or fail to perform any act required under this Chapter.15
(2) The permanent registration license plate assigned to a trailer, semitrailer,16
motorcycle, or other motor vehicle shall be attached to the rear thereof.17
Notwithstanding the foregoing, the permanent registration license plate assigned to18
any truck having a gross vehicle weight in excess of ten thousand pounds or to any19
dump truck may be attached to either the front or rear thereof. For the purposes of20
this Section, dump truck means any truck with a bed that raises to dump a load. The21
permanent registration license plate shall be so displayed during the current22
registration year, except as otherwise provided herein.23
(3)  Every permanent registration license plate shall at all times be securely24
fastened to the vehicle to which it is assigned, so as to prevent the plate from25 ENROLLEDHB NO. 106

swinging, and at a height not less than twelve inches from the ground, measuring1
from the bottom of such plate, in a place and position to be clearly visible, and shall2
be maintained free from foreign materials and in a condition to be clearly legible.3
(4) The provisions of this Section shall not be construed to prohibit placing4
a permanent registration license plate on a rear fender as long as it is facing to the5
rear of the vehicle.6

Section 2.  R.S. 47:507 is hereby repealed in its entirety.8
