DIGEST Present law (R.S. 47:507) provides that motor vehicle permanent registration plates be securely fastened to the assigned motor vehicle in a manner to prevent the plate from swinging, and at a height not less than 12 inches from the ground from the bottom of such plate in a place and position to be clearly visible, and shall be maintained free from foreign materials and in a condition to be clearly legible. Also, specifies that any permanent registration license plate assigned to a truck weighing in excess of 6,000 pounds may be attached to the front or the rear of the vehicle. Proposed law modifies present law by specifying that a truck with a gross weight in excess of 10,000 pounds may attach a permanent registration license plate to the front or rear of the vehicle. Proposed law provides that all permanent registration plates be affixed to the motor vehicle in a place and position to be clearly visible. Proposed law provides that its provisions shall not be construed to prohibit display of a license plate on a rear fender as long as the plate is facing to the rear of the vehicle. (Amends R.S. 32:53(A); Repeals R.S. 47:507) Summary of Amendments Adopted by House Committee Amendments Proposed by House Committee on Transportation, Highways and Public Works to the original bill. 1. Added a provision that provides that the permanent registration license plate assigned to any truck having a gross vehicle weight in excess of 10,000 pounds, as opposed to 6,000 pounds, or to any dump truck may be attached to either the front or the rear of the truck.
