Gisclair (HB 1154) Act No. 539
Prior law, relative to escape rings on crab traps, required at least two escape rings on the
outside walls of the trap with at least one in each chamber of the trap. New law requires
three escape rings with at least two in the upper chamber of the trap.
Prior law required the escape rings to be no less than 2-5/16ths inches in diameter. New law
would change the diameter to 2-3/8ths inches.
Existing law exempts from these requirements crab traps with a mesh of 2-5/16ths inches.
Prior law exempts traps in Lake Pontchartrain. New law removes the exemption for traps
placed in Lake Pontchartrain.
Effective Nov. 15, 2017, and applicable to license year 2017 and thereafter.
