MARRIAGE/LICENSE.  Provides relative to the authority to perform a marriage
ceremony
DIGEST
Present law authorizes certain religious officials to perform marriage ceremonies when
authorized by the authorities of his religion and when he is registered to perform marriages.
Proposed law retains present law and requires the religious official to have attained the age
of majority.
Present law provides that an officiant authorized to perform marriage ceremonies in the
parish of Orleans may waive the seventy-two hour delay for nonresident parties upon
application of the parties giving serious and meritorious reasons.
Proposed law provides that an officiant authorized to perform marriage ceremonies may
waive the seventy-two hour delay for nonresident parties upon application of the parties
giving serious and meritorious reasons.

Committee Amendments Proposed by Senate Committee on Judiciary A to the
engrossed bill
1. Removes language that provides that only officiants authorized to perform
marriage ceremonies in Orleans Parish may waive the 72-hour delay for
nonresident parties under certain circumstances, and instead provides that any
officiant authorized to perform marriage ceremonies may waive the 72-hour
delay for nonresident parties under certain circumstances.
