Existing law (R.S. 17:52) provides that members of parish school boards shall be elected at
the congressional elections.
New law provides an exception to existing law for the Lafayette Parish School Board.
Provides that members of the Lafayette Parish School Board shall be elected at the
gubernatorial elections. Provides that the members of the school board shall serve four-year
terms beginning January first following their election.
New law provides that to facilitate moving the election of members of the Lafayette Parish
School Board from the congressional elections to the gubernatorial elections, the members
of the school board elected at the congressional elections in 2014 shall serve five-year terms.
Provides that new law shall apply to the election of members who serve terms subsequent
to the terms of the members elected in 2014.
Provisions extending the terms of members elected in 2014 are effective Aug. 1, 2014;
remaining provisions are effective Jan. 1, 2019.
