COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Danielle Davis, Matt Reynolds, Shelby Michaels, and
Walter Smith for saving the life of a spectator
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend Danielle Davis, Matt Reynolds, Shelby Michaels, and Walter Smith for saving2
the life of a spectator at the McNeese Cowboy Stampede Classic Cross Country3
Invitational Meet.4
WHEREAS, March is National Athletic Training Month; and5
WHEREAS, the theme chosen by the National Athletic Trainers' Association for this6
year is "We've got your back!"; and7
WHEREAS, on September 28, 2013, McNeese State University hosted the McNeese8
Cowboy Stampede Classic Cross Country Invitational Meet in which over five hundred male9
and female student athletes from eleven high schools and eleven colleges and universities10
participated; and11
WHEREAS, when an emergency arose at the event, impeccable and expedient12
emergency care was rendered to a spectator who collapsed and became unresponsive; and13
WHEREAS, the elite athletic training staff members from McNeese State University14
activated and followed the emergency action plan in exemplary fashion for the unresponsive15
spectator with the dynamic assistance of the Southeastern Louisiana University athletic16
training staff members; and17
WHEREAS, Danielle Davis, a certified athletic trainer from McNeese State18
University, Shelby Michaels, a McNeese State University athletic training student, and two19
firefighters performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the spectator; and20 HLS 14RS-4373	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, Matthew Reynolds, a certified athletic trainer from Southeastern1
Louisiana University, and Walter Smith, a Southeastern Louisiana University athletic2
training student, assisted by retrieving the automated external defibrillator (AED); and3
WHEREAS, Ms. Davis used the AED to provide an electrical shock in a timely4
manner to restart the injured spectator's heart to save his life; and5
WHEREAS, both the McNeese State University Athletic Department and its athletic6
training staff and the Southeastern Louisiana University Athletic Department and its athletic7
training staff should be commended for flawlessly implementing an emergency action plan8
with essential emergency care equipment and supplies.9
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby10
commend the actions of certified athletic trainers Danielle Davis and Matt Reynolds and11
athletic training students Shelby Michaels and Walter Smith in performing their athletic12
training duties to the highest standard and does hereby record for posterity their exemplary13
emergency responses which contributed to a life-saving rescue.14
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that suitable copies of this Resolution be transmitted15
to Danielle Davis, Matt Reynolds, Shelby Michaels, and Walter Smith.16
