ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 16 BY REPRESENTATIVES COX, BROWN, AND HOWARD AND SENATORS GALLOT, LONG, AND PEACOCK A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To recognize the tricentennial of Natchitoches and to encourage participation in tricentennial observances and activities throughout 2014. WHEREAS, 2014 marks the 300th anniversary of the founding of Natchitoches by Louis Juchereau de St. Denis; and WHEREAS, this memorable and historic anniversary is being marked by ceremony and celebration; and WHEREAS, Natchitoches is a city recognized for its rich history, unique cultural traditions and heritage, historic buildings, beautiful landscapes, and delicious cuisine; and WHEREAS, 300 years after its founding, Natchitoches remains a distinctive destination, home to the Cane River National Heritage Area and the Cane River Creole National Historical Park; and WHEREAS, Natchitoches's unique cultural blend of French, Spanish, Indian, African, and Creole traditions is still visible in the community today; and WHEREAS, the Natchitoches Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Natchitoches Area Chamber of Commerce continue to promote and market this 300 year-old destination; and WHEREAS, Natchitoches is designated as the official "Meat Pie Capital of Louisiana", and is the home of an annual Christmas Festival; and WHEREAS, Natchitoches's legacy is celebrated and preserved throughout the Cane River region; and WHEREAS, the city of Natchitoches serves as the tourism hub of a rural, agricultural heritage area stretching thirty-five miles along the Cane River, and which includes more than thirty sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and seven sites that ENROLLEDHCR NO. 16 Page 2 of 2 have been designated as National Historic Landmarks, including downtown Natchitoches which, along with an adjacent neighborhood, comprises a National Historic Landmark District; and WHEREAS, Natchitoches has received national recognition and accolades as a Preserve America Community, a Great American Main Street, and a Distinctive Destination; and WHEREAS, the tricentennial of Natchitoches merits special recognition, as it celebrates the unique contributions that Natchitoches has offered Louisiana for the past three centuries. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize the tricentennial of Natchitoches and does hereby commend the citizens of Natchitoches, past and present, for their extraordinary contributions to the state of Louisiana and the United States of America. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby encourage the citizens of Louisiana to participate in local tricentennial observances and activities to mark this historic occasion throughout 2014.
